LO sleep in a bouncy seat. She gives us 6-8 hours in it at 7 weeks old. We tried the bassinette a couple of times and she only slept about 3-4 hours. Even when she is awake she hates being flat on her back. We still give her lots of flat time and tummy time, but sleep in equally important. We will slowly transition to her crib. I'm not worried about anything.

DD slept in her bouncy seat for the first few days/weeks until we could get her used to the PnP--I think it felt a bit more cozy than more open expanse of the PnP. I don't think you can really form bad sleep habits until they are older and in the early days, I am a big believer of whatever works!

At this young of an age, I think you gotta do what you gotta do. My LO slept in his swing at night sometimes. At one point we had the swing in our room, bouncy chair and pack n play. We would move him around from various places trying to see where he would sleep. lol He slept in the swing a little bit but maybe like 1-2 hours at a time since he was waking up so much at night. I think we only had the swing in our room for a few weeks but DS preferred sleeping in his bouncy chair.

DD slept fine in her PnP at night until three months. She always napped in her swing (seriously until like eight months!). So at three months we started letting her sleep in her swing all night and she would sleep 12 hours straight (until the four month regression hit, anyway). I think it's safe so long as baby's strapped in, and so long as the swing is reclined.

A lot of good info on swing sleeping here, including an interview with Dr. Karp (Happiest Baby on the Block author and paediatrician): http://www.troublesometots.com/baby-swings-work-and-i-can-prove-it/

We weaned off the swing for nighttime by 5.5 months by following the plan on Troublesome Tots. And we weaned off for naps by eight months. I say do what you need to do to get some sleep!

@Danizaur: I know you are concerned about the RnP, so I'm not saying you should use it or not, that's your call, but my pediatrician did know that we were using it for sleeping and had absolutely no concerns about it. They did advice against cobedding (which I believe can be done safely, but again, I wasn't comfortable with).

Lo always slept great in the swing. I made a point of always putting her to bed flat in the pnp, but if she woke up and wouldn't go back to sleep after nursing, into the swing she went. She got lots of tummy time and movement when she was awake. Eventually she went back down easily or didn't wake up in the night at all and slept flat no problem. My opinion is that at that age, you have to do what works for everybody to get some sleep.

@loveisstrange: I've not tried it yet. I figured that he might not like the openness and separation of the PnP. The crib would probably be the same I would think.

Why not just let him sleep in the crib? C hated the PnP, I didn't want to buy yet another piece of gear... So she went in her crib at 2 weeks old.

Honestly, I don't regret it. It cuts out that whole transition altogether and I think makes life easier. She napped in her swing until she was like 4 months old, but she was in the crib at night and is a great sleeper.

Another vote for the RnP! Although I guess the swing accomplishes the same thing if you turn off the movement. Whatever works at that stage...you guys need to sleep! (Although I'm kinda anti co-sleeping for safety reasons, a lot of people swear by that, too.)

We had a similar situation when LO was around 3-weeks old. I was so torn about what to do, but I needed some sleep! She slept in the swing at night for about two weeks (it was the only way she would sleep for more than ten minutes) and then after trying a miracle blanket she slept in the bassinet with no problems. She has been a very good sleeper since (minus on vacations  ) and it didn't ruin her at all.

Man this is causing flashbacks. Some things that worked for us (sometimes) at that age:
- Swaddling with two swaddles - first a Miracle Blanket, then A&A (I think the warmth helped and our doc said it was ok as long as he wasn't in really warm PJs and the room temp was around 68)
- Rock N Play as others have suggested
- Bouncing vigorously (with head well supported) on the exercise ball for like 15-20 minutes until he was deep asleep and then verrry carefully transferring to the crib
- Taking shifts - I would go to bed as soon as LO did while my husband did dishes, cleaned etc. Basically the hope was that in the 12-hour stretch between 7 and 7, we could each hope to get at least 7 hours. He would also get the baby, change his diaper and bring him to me to nurse.

Basically we just tried a bunch of things for a few weeks until we either figured it out or he just naturally grew into a better sleeper (probably a combo). It's all about survival and I wouldn't hesitate to use the swing if needed. Maybe you could try the PnP first and if it's not happening, then use the swing for that stretch of night (not necessarily all night).

I don't think it'd be the end of the world. Chances are you'd do it for a week or so then find something else that works. Other options are a rnp or a cosleeper. If you cosleep in the bed you could get something like the snuza (snooza? spelling?) and just not use blankets/pillows. Or use those A&A ones on yourself maybe.

We didn't let him sleep in a swing even though he slept great in it for naps, but we did let him sleep in a rock 'n play regularly for the first month or so! I hear conflicting information about that too, but I felt more comfortable doing that than a swing... I don't know, something about the swaying motion all night long didn't sit well with me. I saw the rock 'n play more like an elevated bassinet. We shifted his head often to make sure he wasn't just always in one position.

At 2 weeks I'd do whatever works. I agree with sharing the bed, that was never something I was comfortable with and I didn't sleep that way.

If PnP makes you sleep the best, put him in there for the part of the night he will sleep in it and the swing for the rest for now. There is lots of time to create good sleep habits.

And look at the bright side, he is sleeping!

@Danizaur: Does LO nap in other places throughout out the day? That may help ease some of the night issues if he can get used to naps in other places (crib, floor, PnP, swing, etc).

I agree with PPs that if you're not comfortable with him in bed and following all the cosleeping recommendations then it's a good idea to skip that. I hope you can find a "happy place" for him soon.

It was similar for us but I made a rule not to do the swing at night. It might be okay as long as lo is in different positions during the day like tummy time or vertical tummy time. Spine development was my concern. It might be okay as long as lo gets breaks, as in the baby is only in there for a couple of hours and then eats and gets to stretch. Just my personal opinion after research. The younger the baby, the more concerned I was with spine development. I also do not leave baby in carseats unless we are in the car. (It was posted all over my ob office when I was pregnant.)

@sarahbee: I agree.

@lawbee11: I think he would still sleep good in it without the movement, it's the head slumping I'm worried about. I'm not sure I could sleep any easier with him in it than I would with him in the bed. The only time I sleep easy (as easy as possible) is when he's in his PnP.

@Danizaur: I personally wouldn't have felt comfortable with my LO sleeping all night in the swing while on because sleeping with the assistance of movement isn't as restorative. But you have to make the decision that's right for your family!

Agree with the Rock 'n' play. It was really a life saver for us because we could rock M to sleep and then not to have to transfer her to another surface and it cradled her well.

If you do decide to go with the swing I think it's ok at 2 weeks. I think that in the first 8 weeks or so you have to do whatever you can so that you can all get some sleep. After that you can start worrying about bad habits. We still used the rock'n'play after 8 weeks but we would rock it less and less until she could go to sleep without the movement.

Good luck! Newborn sleep is tough :(

Don't cosleep if you're using pillows and blankets. There are rules of safe cosleeping and one of them is no pillows or blankets.

At 2 weeks, I wouldn't worry about the swing. Two weeks is the still the "whatever works" phase. The swing is certainly safer than unsafe cosleeping!

@MrsH: Nope! My sister talked me out of buying one with it and getting a cheaper one because her daughter didn't use their newborn sleeper attachments at all. Thanks sis. Lol
