@HappyBaker: the issue with the boppy is babies can slip down into the center. A bassinet is usually a bit better than a crib for newborns. We plan on investing in the halo bassinet for baby #3

There is a difference between a Boppy, and a Boppy lounger. The lounger is more like a pillow?

I wouldn't feel comfortable using a Boppy for sleep at all due to slumping. I would feel ok using a Boppy lounger for newborn naps when they are small enough to fit on it and definitely can't roll.

I let my DD nap on the Boppy as a newborn if I was awake because it was literally the only place she'd stay asleep if I set her down. I dozed off sitting up on the couch next to her a few times but never went into a deep sleep. I did let her sleep on the nap nanny at night a few times, I had it up on the bed next to me, she was swaddled tightly and was waking up like every 45 mins anyway. I'd probably feel more safe directly cosleeping with the bed set up for it than having her sleep on the Boppy.

@HappyBaker: Both my babies slept next to me and LO2 definitely slept on the boppy lounger. I think a big reason I was comfortable with it during the super early newborn days, was that I had to wake up every 2 hours to feed anyway, so it wasn't like we both pass out and I wouldn't even know what happened till the next morning.

Only allowed her to sleep in crib, PnP or held by a very awake adult (i.e. no risk of fall asleep holding her). For both kids. First kid was a rubbish sleeper second one is better. Positional asphyxiation is a real and scary thing, particularly on couches.

@HappyBaker: with our first, we tried everything and she basically WOULD NOT sleep outside of my arms. She was a very high needs baby. With our new baby girl (7 weeks), we have it much easier but sleep will never be completely easy, even with an easy baby. For the first week or so, she’d sleep anywhere. Then I had to move her to an in-bed cosleeper and then tried her in the rock n play for a while. That worked well, but I didn’t want to make it too much of a habit because of all the controversy over flat head, etc., resulting from too much time in there.

We’re now using a SnuggleMe Organic in the bed. My DH doesn’t sleep in the bed (bad back), so it’s just me and baby in the bed. Technically, the SnuggleMe isn’t totally safe for overnight sleep because it doesn’t have breathable sides. However, baby is swaddled and right next to me, so I really don’t worry. She ends up cuddled with me toward the morning because I often fall asleep nursing. I think mother’s instinct prevents against rolling over her, smothering, etc. maybe I’m wrong, but that’s my feeling.

I think almost all sleep arrangements have risks and benefits for babies. You just have to consider what gives you the most peace of mind and provides baby the safest possible sleep.

You did mention you were on a sectional. I know having babies sleep on couches is very unsafe, so do watch out for that. Otherwise, follow your mommy instinct!

Our bouncy chair was basically flat so I was fine for naps in there and the swing. Never used the boppy.

Ok thanks everyone! I can’t believe we never dealt with this since we held the other two and stayed awake ourselves all night ha. He did great last night just in the pack and play so fingers crossed that continues!

We have the boppy lounger and have been letting our 3 month old doze on it in the evening while we are awake for the past week because he has a nasty cold and is uncomfortable lying flat (he will not sleep in the rnp). It made me really nervous for him to even nap in it as a newborn because it says no sleep, but I feel more comfortable now. I wouldn't do it overnight or put it in a crib though.

@HappyBaker: RnP is not acceptable either. At least not technically. Our son did sleep in his swing and his boppy as a newborn, but only while I was awake. We loved the halo for nighttime because it’s torallt safe and it vibrates!

I let DD sleep in a bouncy chair 1 time, the first night home. And that was it. It made me so nervous I didn't like it one bit. It was crib for her after that and I super in her room in a recliner for awhile. And DS was in a pnp right next to me for the first month or so and then in his crib.

Yes, I really only had my son either in the crib at night...we started co sleeping at around 11 months and again at 2 years, but never overnight in a swing, rock and play, bouncer or anything...because we didn't have access to them. I would have for sure tried a rock and play if we had been able to get our hands on one.

Boppy or bouncy seat: no way not ever, not safe
RnP or big swing: technically not considered safe but it's safe enough for me, both kids slept in these a lot

DS is 4 days old and has been sleeping great on a boppy next to me on our sectional, swaddled up, while I also sleep. Of course this morning I saw the giant NO SLEEP tag on it and now feel bad we’ve been doing it!

Did you really not let your baby sleep in anything but a crib / pnp/ rnp at night? I was checking about bouncers and swings and it seems they are fine for naps but not night time?
