There are a zillion threads about this on HB if you search for it.

My kids both slept in the RNP for the first few weeks of life - maybe 3-4 weeks? Both of them had reflux, but we never had an issue with them sleeping in them for months and months. DS1 actually preferred the crib and slept better in one and DS2 we transitioned him early on because it didn't seem to make a difference in his sleep. The RNP was just convenient because it was small and portable and it was easy to grab the baby next to the bed after each C-section for me.

Mine did, but I'll be perfectly honest, I feel guilty about it and am really hoping that I can avoid it with the next kid. But if I've learned anything as a parent, it's never say never :meh:

#2 slept in the RnP until about 4 months. My pediatrician said that it's not recommended, but she gets why people do it and realistically it's much safer than falling asleep with baby in a chair or un-intentional co-sleeping. She said to move her once she started rolling, which we did at 4 months. We did a little crib nest when we transitioned her and it wasn't terrible. Well worth the months of good sleep we got.

I’ll be the bad mom and admit that after no sleep for several weeks with both our girls, they slept on their stomachs (8 weeks and 6 weeks). The RNP isn’t any safer than stomach sleeping (they’re both considered unsafe, with on the back in the crib being the only safe sleep position) and you don’t have the problem with transitioning to the crib.

E slept in the slightly inclined reversible napper/changer part of our pack-n-play until she was 6 weeks. The biggest reason she stopped was b/c she spit up a full feed and at 3am I was not up for cleaning anything and then she slept fine flat and I didn't want to confuse her by trying to put her back in it.

😂😂😂 DD1 slept in the RnP until she was 8 months. DD2 is currently 4 months and she will be in the RNP for a few more months at least. My only concern is if they try to roll or sit up in it, but that hasn't happened so I'm not changing. DD2 has slept through the night since 8 weeks, and I fully credit the RnP!

My daughter slept in an RnP until she was 3 months old. We couldn't fit anything larger next to our bed, and we needed an incline because she was a reflux baby, and the RnP worked great for her. She had no issues with a crib transition, and she was a shifty enough kid that we didn't have any flat spot issues with her head, but I know that's come up as an issue with using RnP for extended periods of time. I did make sure that she wasn't in it during the day very often, so that might have helped.

I love the rock n play and recommend it to all of my mommy to be friends. My first son slept in it until 8 weeks or so and we’ll probably do the same with my second. Not sure how the crib transition will go with my second, but with my first we started with naps and then moved to night time. It wasn’t that bad but we still used a swaddle sleep sack. No flat head issues either. I highly recommend!

My first one never did.
My 2nd is now 5 weeks old and he doesn’t spend the whole night in it, but if there’s a night where he seems particularly unsettled I’ll put him in it for one stretch of the night (so for example from the 11pm wake up to the 3am wake up). There have definitely been a couple nights where I couldn’t get him settled in the crib but he fell asleep and stayed asleep in the rnp.
I’m not concerned about safety, I’m more concerned about him getting used to it. We’ve done crib from day 1 home and he takes 95% of his naps and night sleep in it and he does well. I’m afraid of undoing that so I’m careful about how often and for how long I let him use it.

My third baby slept in a RNP for the first 2-3 months. Our pediatrician said it was fine but no more than 3 months. BUT he did have a flat spot on his head and we took him to a head shape specialist. When we told them he slept in a RNP at night they told me it was a firm no and couldn’t believe my pediatrician said it was okay. To be fair I don’t think the RNP caused the flat head but it didn’t help it either. It’s easier to move your head from side to side on a flat surface than in an RNP. Anyway, if I had to do it again I would skip the RNP for night time sleep.

@CatchAFallingStar: That thing was a lifesaver. LO slept in it until 10 weeks before moving to the crib. We did a "nest" in the crib to ease the transition.

We did. He slept in it from 3 weeks - 4 months. He still slept like shit (2-3 hours) but it was better than the 30 mins he would sleep otherwise in his crib or PNP.

He does have a flat head but I’m not sure if that’s due to the RNP or just his head shape ;)

We did and I would do it again, even though the crib transition sucked. That little snuggly RnP was like a magic sleep oasis. What ultimately helped our crib transitions was the miracle blanket for my first and the merlin suit for my second. Because of the incline I was only comfortable with night sleep in the RnP being in our room, not the nursery.

Both of mine slept in it for way longer than they were supposed to. Probably until they were about 5 months old! OOPS, haha, their feet were hanging out of it.... They slept SO GREAT in it so it was hard to quit. No flat head issues for either.

Anyway - we did naps flat first, then to the night. To be honest, it wasn't that bad of a transition, took a week or so. I think many kids need to transition from something anyway - swaddle, pinky, etc... I found once they were rolling and could roll onto their bellies to sleep they were great in the crib.

Second slept in a rnp for about 2.5 months and the transition was a non issue. I was glad to get it out of the way though! My pediatrician did recommend having him out by three/four months because he felt later than that would be hindering development.

We did rock n play for the first 3ish months and it's a life saver. I think it made them better sleepers because I would always put them down drowsy but awake and give it a gentle rock.. eventually I didn't have to rock it much at all and they would sleep.

The transition to crib was seamless for my son. I think my daughter had a rough night or two but that was it. Totally a life saver. No flat head issues here either.

Both my kids had reflux due to food intolerances and the rnp was a life saver for us! They both slept in it until they were almost 4 months old. The 2-3 rough nights of transitioning to the crib were well worth the weeks and weeks of good sleep we all got. We never had any issues with flat head, etc. And for us, it wasn’t rnp vs crib, it was rnp vs sleeping on me because that was the only other way they were comfortable, so the rnp was definitely the safer option.

our baby slept in it as his bassinet until we moved him to his crib (he was outgrowing the RnP and starting to seem uncomfortable) at 6 weeks. I was really worried that the transition was going to be tough and it was totally a seamless non-issue, and we still used the RnP for naps and hanging out for a while after. our ped wasn't worried about him being in it but she encouraged us to get going on the crib transition. the one I used I borrowed from a good friend whose son slept in it the same way until 4 months! and then I passed it along to another girlfriend whose daughter has been in it for 3 months now. planning to use it again for #2.

Both my babies slept in the rock and play. I tried a flat surface and neither could sleep that way (not that they slept so great in the rnp but still- better!). Our pediatrician knew t both times and never raised any concern. I had read the pros and cons and sleep won out!

The transition to the crib was hard with my older daughter- but she was a baby where everything was hard so it’s not surprising. With my younger more easy going one we transitioned to a pack and play and it wasn’t so bad.

I figured if My pediatrician was fine (and we had two different ones between the kids) I cared more about that than what randoms on the internet said. But I was careful to watch for flat spots on their heads- never had a problem but I always thought that was partly because they both loved to be worn in the carrier more than ride in the stroller.

Mine didn't, but I would have done it in a heart beat. It isn't the best choice, but it's a safe choice and most kids transition easily. We have a bassinet on an incline that's similar that we loved.

Mine couldn't sleep on flat surfaces due to reflux. His only way of sleeping soundly was head on my elbow, mouth nursing, which I don't recommend :-)

Does/did your baby sleep in a Rock & Play at night? I tried it out last night and my one-month-old slept so soundly. It was the best night of sleep we’ve both had since she was born. But, after a little research, it looks like maybe it’s not the best option for sleeping because of the non-flat surface. Also, I don’t want to have a big struggle when we transition to her crib. But— sleep!! It’s in high demand around here and last night was so peaceful. Weighing pros and cons.

What’s your experience?
