@Myicitygirl: My girl has a high sleep need and didn't drop to one nap until 14 months. When she didn't get enough sleep, she would be super cranky and fussy. It sounds like your LO is getting the sleep he needs.

As for the night wakings, I actually gave her bottles instead of nursing so that I could tell if she was actually hungry or just wanting it for comfort. Once I got a better idea of when she was waking to confort nurse, I would let her fuss/cry for 5 min before going in there. It didn't take long for her to drop some wakings. She still wakes 2-3 times a night but she goes right back to sleep w/o my assistance now.

No advice (looks like other users are giving you some great ideas, though) except that if your toddler is happy then he is probably getting enough sleep. My LO stopped napping early on but she's still happy so I did not stress over it. I asked her doctor and she said it was perfectly fine. Not every kid can fit into the same mold and those minimum sleep requirements do not work for everyone. Hope things improve very soon!!

Also, I used this webinar as a base for the sleep training we did. I find it gentle and while it might have been frustrating for a few days, it worked. It's called Trading Down Sleep Associations and it's from Isis Parenting: https://connectpro84736905.adobeconnect.com/_a955655781/p7vmb058hnj/?launcher=false&fcsContent=true&pbMode=normal

Oh, honey I'm sorry you're struggling with this! I, too have a baby who will wake up and only be soothed by a little bit of nursing in the middle of the night. When he wakes up, is he frantic or is he just crying or babbling? I did a little gentle sleep training (no CIO) when she was 8 months old or so which helped us get her to sleep without needing to be rocked or nursed to sleep.

How is he falling asleep? Is he going into his crib awake? That helped us SO MUCH when we transitioned her to falling asleep on her own. It took a while - we had to stay in the room with her until she was a sleep for a few nights until we transitioned out. Once we started doing that, she stopped waking every 2 hours. At almost 11 months now, she gets up ~1x/night which is manageable (for me).

As for naps, I'm not sure. I think at that age they can transition to 1 (I know my daycare has the 1 year olds take one long nap in the early afternoon and it works for them).

@Myicitygirl: My LO just turned 1 and her night sleep has been erratic to say the least since about 11 months after she started STTN at 7.5 months.
I *think* it's because she is starting to transition to 1 nap. At daycare sometimes she takes 1 naps and sometimes 2. Also it has been harder to get her down for naps at home. It's possible your LO is starting to transition as well! Here's a thread I started asking for advice:
http://boards.hellobee.com/topic/2-to-1-naps
I think he is still getting a decent amount of sleep each day where you shouldn't worry yet. But if you are doesn't hurt to give your ped a call. My ped told us at her 1 yr appointment that separation anxiety starts now and it's a good thing because it shows progress. They're starting to distinguish strangers.

M also does not take a ton of solids and it really depends on her mood and pickiness is starting to shine through. It's normal at this age! If you're concerned about weight gain try giving more (Healthy) fatty foods such as avocado? Was your ped concerned about his weight gain at his 1 year? We were a tad about M's for the same reason and he showed us her growth chart and it's been a steady increase.
M still nurses and we supplement but my supply is tanking so I'm going to start drinking cow's milk again so she gets it indirectly first. Then if all goes well she'll start getting it directly in increments. Or my doctor also suggested Soy milk with calcium but I'm not fond of that suggestion.

Hope this helps but you should really call your pediatrician and ask them these questions if you're this concerned!

I haven't been here yet (son is 11.5 months), but from what I know from other moms when their toddlers went to 1 nap, night sleep got wonky. I think user @honeybee had a similar issue and then consolidating to 1 nap helped night sleep and naps. Also, I know blogger @mrssuperhero worked on sleep training her youngest after having similar night waking and nap issues (actually, almost exactly what you described!)

Have you tried any form of sleep training? Nap training? What happens if you let him cry a little when he wakes at night? My son generally STTN, but almost always wakes once to fuss or cry a little. 90% of the time he falls back to sleep within 5 minutes.

Also, not sure if it helps, but I think kids just have different sleep requireemnts. My son has always been on the lowish end of sleep - he just doesn't need as much sleep as other babies (unfortunately!) He sleeps 10-10.5 hours at night and then 2-2.5 hours of naps during the day. Some days, like yesterday, he only slept 12 hours total. If I was concerned, I'd ask myself if my son seems overtired or sleep deprived.

On the solids issues - how much is he eating? What types of foods? Have you tested the dairy intolerance recently? My son had it and outgrew it by 10 months.

I tend to write off teething as a cause of chronically bad sleep. But, teething hasn't affected my son that much so it's easy for me to say!

No advice.... but my SIL's baby isn't sleeping much at all and her doctor said it was fine and wasn't going to hurt her development. Wishing you good luck and some sleep!

If he isn't eating/nursing a lot at night, do you mean overnight or dinner time? If overnight, wondering if he's waking out of habit vs hunger?

Thanks. Hoping someone has gone through something similar and can provide insight.

I read that chronic lack of sleep can result in ADHD-like symptoms including forgetfulness, anxiety and hyperactivity (to clarify, the article did not state that lack of sleep causes ADHD, just that they have similar symptoms). I definitely exhibit those symptoms (hello mom brain) and am worried for my baby boy.

So my 13 month old has not STTN since he was 5 months old. For the past 8 months he has gotten up 2-4 times a night. Most of the time I nurse him for a few minutes and he goes right back to sleep. He only sleeps about 11-12 hours in a 24 hour period. He used to sleep a total of 10-11 hours at night, but for the past month has slept only 8.5-9.5 hours at night (with his multiple wakings, the longest stretch is anywhere from 2-5 hours). I make up for it with long naps (unfortunately, he will only nap if I wear him, which is starting to drive me insane).

Should I try consolidating his 2 naps? He has not really fought the morning nap. But would it help him to sleep longer at night?

Should I be concerned that (1) he doesnt sleep that much overall (will it impair his brain/general development?) and (2) his night sleep has dropped? He is generally a happy toddler, but He does has separation anxiety right now.

He doesn't eat as much in the solids department as I would like and still breastfeeds on demand, almost every 2-2.5 hours. I have not started him on cows milk yet because of milk protein intolerance. He is pretty slim and I wonder if filling him up would help him to sleep but he won't eat or nurse a lot at night.

He has had 8 teeth for months, and it looks like he may be teething again. So it could be teething pain, although most of the time he does fall back to sleep after nursing.

Sorry for the super long post. I am stressed out, exhausted and starting to lose it.
