@agold: It only happened a couple of times, in the newborn days, when I was on high alert and sleeping super lightly anyway. And I jumped out of bed, reached over, and knew instantly that she was fine.

@LindsayLou: Oh my gosh. Missing baby in the bed. That sounds terrible. I'm pregnant now and pray I don't have that incident.

@agold: I've always considered them to be sleepwalking, or something similar. I figure even the times where I never leave the room, or even the bed, I'm doing things other than just sleeping, but in a different state.

I do the same thing--I either see the spider fall into the bed or see it crawling. Never mind that it's too dark to see that anyway.

The most terrifying instances were when my daughter was a newborn and I would dream that I'd brought her into bed with me from her bassinet by the side of the bed, but then couldn't find her. Of course, she was always safe and sound in the bassinet.

And yes, waking up in random parts of the house is surprisingly not disturbing at all.

@LindsayLou: Me too!! I will honestly see the spider fall from the ceiling onto the bed. I will panic and jump out of bed and tear off the covers. It will take me quite a while to calm down and get back into bed. Also oddly distressing is when I wake up and put on clothes because I think there are people in the room and I'm dressed inappropriately. ETA: I actually didn't even know if those incidents were considering "sleepwalking" but figured they were under the same umbrella. I also just generally walk around and find myself downstairs. That's not distressing, though.

@agold: I've heard that too, but never really understood why you're not supposed to wake them up. My mom always did the same thing, just directed me back to bed. Now when it happens, I usually wake up right in the middle of it if my husband talks to me. He almost always sleeps through it though.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who has that all too real experience of thinking there's a spider in the bed! I totally feel like a crazy person who's having hallucinations.

I did it a few times as a kid. Once my mom told me they were coming upstairs to go to bed and I was coming out of my room. She tried to ask me what as I was doing, then realized I was sleeping. So she turned me around and I walked back to my room. Another time I woke up in our kitchen. Kinda freaky!

@LindsayLou: Absolutely ditto on all you said. I was and still am a sleepwalker. I think it ties to stress. Spider in the bed is the absolute worst!!! (I'm so very glad to hear you deal with that specific one because I often feel so crazy over those damn spider "dreams" that are like full real life to me!) At least now I will usually wake myself up and I just have to talk myself back to reality.

My mom told me that she learned you aren't supposed to wake up a sleep walker. She would talk to me and try to redirect me back upstairs when I was little.

My LO is 2.5 and has sleepwalked a couple of times. Both times were over the weekend and I realized the only thing that was the same is she skipped her nap both days. I googled it and it looks like exhaustion is a contributing factor. We've been more strict about making sure she gets a nap and it hasn't happened since. It's scary though! Both times she's run into the door and started crying. She's totally disoriented when we go up to bring her back to her bed. She has doorknob covers so she can't get out of her room (she's on the second floor so I worry about her falling down the stairs).

I'm a sleepwalker. I was as a kid, and still am, but it's never caused any issues. I usually wake up when someone talks to me and have thankfully never tried to leave the house. I do weird things like take my duvet cover off, unplug every lamp in the room, check that the front door is locked, think there's a spider in the bed, just wander around the house. Stress, big life changes, and changes in scenery (moving, just getting home from vacation) can lead to more sleepwalking.

My little brother also sleepwalked a few times, including trying to leave the house, and he grew out of it. A family friend had night terrors as a kid--scary stuff--and he grew out of it as well.

This is very common in my family. My sister and I and my cousins all did it, including wandering outside in a storm and my boy cousins would do weird things like pee in the dryer or fruit drawer in the fridge. All I can say is we all outgrew it with time. Find ways to keep the doors locked that she can't reach

Anyone sleepwalk? Apparently it is more common in kids than in adults. I'm hoping DD is going through a phase. It freaked me out one night when we were on vacation and we slept in a bungalow that opens up to the mountain ridge. She walked outside in the middle of the night, unbeknownst to me. I heard her semi-crying/sleeping outside the door at 2 in the morning. Freaking out that it would ever happen again but I guess you can't stop it. It has happened at preschool twice during naptime this year also.

I want to hear stories about how you dealt with it or if your kids have done it.
