I would say from my experience with my LO this is totally normal. In those ealy weeks/months she would take an hour or more to complete a nursing session even with all the tricks to keep her awake. I just didn't fight it and let her do what she felt she needed and tried to give her plenty of cuddles and comfort nursing time. But thank god for Netflix! I would watch an hour long show each nursing session.

Seems totally normal to me. Feeding at first was a forever job. They get much better and more efficient eventually.

@aprk: my LO has nursed for 15 min or less since about 3 weeks - don't worry ! He is 14 weeks now and nice and healthy !

@Silva: sounds normal mama !! She will get more efficient but as long as she is gaining and having proper dipes you are all good ! I spent a long time waiting for the shoe to drop and it never did. Enjoy your good nurser !

I have the opposite concern - my 3.5 week old seems to eat super fast and will only go for about 15 minutes.

@sarac: that is good to hear. There was a bunch of stuff on kellymom about sleepy eaters = maybe not getting enough. She is a touch jaundiced (totally normal) so i was worrying maybe she was sleepy from that....But I think I'm just being a worrier, because everything I've read says output is the only good indicator.

I wouldn't worry, although you can get some actual feedback from weighing your baby, if you're concerned. I know all of the breastfeeding groups and LCs in our area when DD was born had fancy scales that could be used to weigh your LO. My daughter was a super sleepy eater when she was born, and I was worried too. I can't remember when she finally stopped falling asleep while eating, but I know it definitely did eventually improve.

This is the norm for babies - I'm not really sure who's spreading the false information that it isn't. Some will stop doing this early on, some will do it for months and months (mine). She's absolutely normal! Output is your only indicator that she's getting enough, besides her happiness.

As long as LO's output is good and she's gaining weight then sounds like you're both doing good! And hey, in your arms and nursing is probably her favourite place in the world to be right now :-)

My LO was just like that, but her output was always good. I obsessively kept a log of how often she ate, how long, how many diapers etc. after a couple weeks it was obvious she was getting enough and I worried less! It sounds like you're doing great.

During the newborn days I would park myself in the glider, find a good show on Netflix and nurse away!

Our LO was like this for the first several weeks. Feeding her was a 2 person job for a while (me supporting her, DH tickling her as needed). Her diapers were good. She gradually got better, and went to 15 minutes per side, and then by 3 or so months had cut it down to 10-15 total. Ours was a c section baby, and sometimes they end up being sleepier (at least that's what we were told!).

@runsyellowlites: That's what I was thinking. I'm okay with it as long as she is! Its easy to worry though, huh? I was so prepared for nursing to be this big struggle, and now that its going relatively smoothly (so far) I feel like I"m waiting for the other shoe to drop!

I would say since her output is good there's no reason to worry. Some bebes are just slow nursers! ;)

I'm pretty sure I"m just being paranoid, but thought I'd look to you guys to see if I should contact someone for help...

Thea is 1 week old. She has been a slow eater from the start. My milk came in on day 3. She takes upwards of an hour to finish nursing each time. She sucks vigorously for a few minutes, but then the rest of the time it is long pauses, followed by a few seconds of sucking/swallowing. I try all the tricks- switching sides frequently, change her diaper in between sides, stroke her feet, rub her head, take deep breaths- they all work but she will quickly resume her pattern.

She does seem to be becoming a little bit more efficient as of last night/today, but it still seems to take her a really long time and she requires a lot of waking/nudging to actively suck.

The reason I think I"m just being paranoid is because her diaper output is totally what it should be. That's the best measure of whether or not she is getting enough, right?

Should I contact a lactation consultant?
