@sslm: she still gets enough sessions since she cluster feeds in the evening but I do worry that there isn't as much milk then- like half hour on half hour off for three hours.

I never let DD go more than 3 hours without nursing during the day, even now at 16 weeks. I do that mostly for supply reasons, I attribute my success with breastfeeding to lots and lots of sessions. Plus, they're supposed to eat around 7 times per day, so I'm always trying to hit that target.

At night, my midwife told me to let her sleep at her 6 week appointment, but not to let her go more than 6 hours, so I always woke her to feed. I don't do that anymore though.

Enjoy the sleepy stage while it lasts!!! :)

I woke her up, but only because we were instructed to by her pediatrician. She was itty-bitty, though- 4.5lbs when we brought her home from the hospital, which could have had something to do with it. Do what you're comfortable with!

@Foodnerd81: nah, you're good :) LO at first, when we let her just go on her on schedule, would wake up grumpy and acting like she was going to eat my face off, but in the last couple of weeks she's started to wake up much happier, and is not nearly as frantic to eat. So, no worries!

Ok great. I was afraid I was being lazy mommy not wanting to wake her. She woke on her own eventually and was a little frantic to eat but now she's happy and awake.

Oh and I was going to add that it doesn't seem to matter what her naps are like during the day; she still sleeps 7+ hours at night. Yesterday she took two short naps, totaling maybe 3.5 hours, and slept from 9-4:30 (and she really could have stayed sleeping, DH accidentally woke her up :p). Today she's already slept for over 2 hours, even with the super long stretch of sleep she had.

I never woke her to eat, and still don't at 6 weeks. The doctor told me she had gained enough weight that it wasn't necessary, and I've found that she will very much wake herself up when she's hungry! She's always been a great sleeper at night and a crappy napper, so I didn't want to interrupt the few hours she was asleep during the day. During the night she slept 3-4 hours from the beginning, so we just went with her schedule.

If my LO had been a sleepy newborn (which she very much was NOT), I would have considered waking her every 2-3 hours to eat during the day. If she was gaining well I would let her sleep at night.

ETA: LO ate every 1.5-2 hours for months and was a very good sleeper from very early on.

@Foodnerd81: Yep. She was pretty alert during the day but she definitely woke up and made herself known when she was hungry. I never had to wake her up. She was gaining fine and had plenty of wet diapers, so I let it be.

@zippylef: even during the day? I never thought I'd have this concern- she def takes after her dad who is a great sleeper, unlike me!

Honestly, I never woke to feed. C was a very, very good sleeper and started a 7 hour night stretch at 2-3 weeks old and, while it freaked me out the first time, I always let her sleep.

If you have/had a sleepy newborn, what was your take on waking to eat? Yes during the day and no at night? Never?

C is 2 weeks old. At her appt on Thursday she was less than 2 ounces from her birth weight so she is probably back up to it by now. She is a champion sleeper some days- like this morning she are from 7:30-8:30 and is still sleeping, at 11. She's been grunting and moving around so I thought she was waking up but when I tried to feed her she's just not interested. If I strip her or change her diaper shell probably wake up. What did you do with your sleepy baby. Did waking her more during the day help with longer stretches at night? I'm also breast feeding and stil establishing supply.
