@Revel: Yes, I remember that now too after reading your reply. Prolactin had to be over a certain threshold before they seriously considered a tumor OR if even if it was lower than the threshold but it didn't drop after a month of medication.

I had elevated prolactin and went on medication to bring it down while doing fertility treatments. Once it was back into a normal range, I still couldn't get pregnant. We ended up doing IVF and I kept up with the medication (sorry I can't remember the name right now, but I can look it up if you're interested) throughout my IVf cycle. My RE did not think the high prolactin itself was causing my inability to get pregnant (I have endometriosis), but wanted to make sure it was normal during my IVF cycle to make sure all my numbers were fine and give me the best chance at getting and staying pregnant.

Slightly different scenario - I tested slightly elevated the first time and then normal on my retest. My understanding on the scarier explanations (tumors) was that usually levels would be very high and that they are easily treated, not to say it wouldn't be a terrifying situation. I was told that levels can vary a lot, things like sex and exercise can impact your prolactin test. Don't have a source on that right now.

In terms of my fertility I have longer, semi irregular cycles but conceived about 4 months after this prolactin testing in 2012 (we were not TTC), and then am currently 14 weeks with #2, after TTC for about 9 months. We started seeing an RE last fall but did not use any interventions/meds for either pregnancy.

@goodnightelisabeth: I had this exact scenario happen back in August when I was getting ready to start a new round of IVF.
Day 3 test showed slightly elevated.
Told me to fast and test again - even more elevated.
They scared the crap out of me talking about possible tumors and stuff but it turns out some women just have it. I seriously had myself in hysterics thinking i had a brain tumor when that was a total overreaction. Vast majority of the time it's just a fluke thing. Just like some people have an overactive thyroid, for example.

I've been on an extremely low dose of cabergoline since September.
If you take that for 30 days, test again, and it's still elevated, then they will send you for an MRI (at least that's what they do at my practice).
My first test post meds my prolactin came back too LOW. So they lowered my dose even further.

It's had no effect on me whatsoever and I'm not even sure what the impact of elevated prolactin is on conceiving. But they did tell me that once I got pregnant (if) I wouldn't need it anymore. So maybe it impacts ovulation?

Good luck and this definitely one of those things that can sound way scarier than it is!
(I posted about this a bit on the IVF Thread #4 if you want to go back and see how worried I was and it was all for nothing).

Hi all,

After nearly 2 years of TTC, my OB sent me to a fertility specialist. My ultrasound looked normal and everything checked out in the lab with my husband. So we moved forward with CD 3 blood work. Everything came back normal except for prolactin, which was "slightly elevated." My doctor wanted me to fast and have it checked again, so I did. I got the results today and the prolactin was still elevated, this time even a little higher.

My doctor is now on vacation so I'm waiting to understand exactly what this will mean. I've done a little research and understand that a few different things can cause elevated prolactin, but I just don't have a grasp on what that might be doing to affect my fertility or what the reason might be behind it since there are so many possibilities, and my ultrasound was normal. I also still have to wait for CD21 to do my progesterone blood work.

Can anyone share their experiences with slightly elevated prolactin and what that meant for your fertility journey?

Thank you!
