@sunny: @MsLipGloss:
They totally do grow out of it. I feel like that was one of the biggest things I didn't know about BFing. I saw all these women nursing causally lounging on the couch or in a rocker. People that posted to FB or HB while nursing. I couldn't do ANY of that. I literally was frozen in one position. Slowly though I started being able to use one hand to do something while she was nursing and now, I think I could wash dishes and she would latch on if I let her!

@mamabird: i'll try that, but i think LO is just being lazy! :P

@Thehistoryofus: that's exactly how we're nursing. totally stuck in 1 position for an hour+. good to know she might grow out of it.

@c.sassy: yes, when she's only on the nipple, it hurts which is why i want to fix this!

@TheHistoryofUs: My LO is 5 days and I am having to do the same thing . . . good to know that your LO grew out of it, as so far, BF has been a very difficult process that I am determined to work through, but it is not without its challenges.

My baby did this at first...at 5 weeks he doesn't do it nearly as much. My LC told me to hold his chin down to keep mouth open wide. So of I am cradle holding with left arm (latched on right breast, left hand behind his head) I reach around with my thumb and depress his chin and hold it there while he nurses. If it gets slippery you may use a piece of gauze or thin blanket between for traction.

Is it causing pain for you, or is she fussy or satisfied after feedings? My LO had a textbook latch until about 2 weeks. Then she altered it and I started worrying. But, I had no pain, and she was satisfied and growing, so all is good. Maybe it will be the same for you. The ped and LC said that just because it's not textbook doesn't mean that it won't work.

@sunny: The first few weeks sucked for me because I had to nurse sitting straight up with one hand on my breast and the other hand on the back of her neck/shoulders to guide her. As she nursed for 45 minutes I couldn't move an inch. It sucked.

But she grew out of it and now she can practically nurse without me holding her at all!

Are you bigger breasted? I only ask because if you are it could be the weight causing you to slip. Try placing a rolled up hand towel underneath maybe? :)

@Mrs. Bee: do you mean squeeze it so your hand is in a C shape? Yes I have to do that and hold it that way for her but she still slips off the bottom part of the areola.

do you squeeze your boob and hold onto it while nursing so that it's easier for your lo to maintain a good latch? i used to do that throughout the entire nursing session in the beginning.

@sunny: Ahh ok

My LO had trouble latching for the first 3 weeks or so and I had to keep unlatching her and relatching. Just like with any new skill, she needs to practice it quite a bit before she'll really get the hang of it.

I was taught how to latch correctly at the hospital and I've been able to successfully get LO to do it at home. However, after a few minutes of breast feeding, she will move her mouth and "slip" from a good latch to just being latched on the nipple.

I have just been unlatching and relatching, although I'd like to prevent it from happening to begin with.

Does anyone have any tips on how to deal with this?
