Thanks everyone! This all makes me feel way better - obviously something to potentially keep an eye on, but doesn't seem like a lack of interest at 7 months necessarily means anything! I'll just keep up the teeny servings he'll take and hopefully he'll turn a corner soon :)

Dd2 is kind of like this - she loves food and wants it, but she couldn't figure out how to swallow it.

We found out at her 6 month well check that she has pretty significant lip and tongue ties that may be playing a role. We are waiting to meet with the ENT. In the meantime, she has come a long way and has now figured out how to awkwardly swallow the food and can take several ounces of purees at once. Still looking forward to seeing what the ENT says though

DS wasn't really interested in food for a while either. He had to take some yucky tasting medicine for a while and I think he thought everything was going to taste bad. It wasn't until we gave him ice cream that he finally got interested in trying foods. And it was still slow going months 8 and 9. I didn't really stress about it though. He's a fairly typical toddler eater now :).

@rnmcdonnell: my son was exactly like this. He really didn't start eating real spoonfuls until 9 months and started eating some table foods around 11 months. He was much slower to eat than my daughter. He does great now at 12.5 months!

My oldest wasn't really interested in solids right away. It was closer to 8 months when he was really actually eating them more regularly. He used to cry when I would offer them!!

I would just keep trying, but I don't think you need to be concerned yet!

Neither of my LOs were very interested in eating until about 10 or 11 months. They would eat a bite or two at a time, but that's about it. Also, neither of my children, especially my older one, ever really put things in their mouths and neither have sensory issues. Things can change so quickly though, so I wouldn't worry about it too much unless your doctor is concerned.

@rnmcdonnell: We didn't push it too hard for a while but I do think we offered something every day. He responded best to the really thinned out, jarred, sweet foods like stage 1 prunes. He wouldn't take anything homemade. After a couple months of that, he moved pretty quickly to pouches and finger foods.

My ds2 just turned nine months and he just last week started to be interested in purees. Now he is eating them like crazy. Before he was the same - just pushing the food out with his tongue or not even interested in opening his mouth.

DS1 is three now but as a baby he never put things in his mouth just like you described - not even when teething. He did end up having some delays with eating table food. Around age one he started early intervention to help with feeding issues. After a few months of early intervention, he caught up and 'graduated'. Now you would never know he had an issue and he will eat anything. Your experience may end up being totally different but like others said, I wouldn't stress too much but would mention it at his next check up.

@rnmcdonnell: it took me forever to figure out a feeding schedule and at 10 months I wasn't consistently getting him to do 3 meals a day like it seemed everyone else was doing! I made sure to sit him down a little hungry before a bottle in the morning and afternoon and gave him either puffs, chunk of banana or roasted sweet potatoes and would eat a snack with him. Trying to put food in his mouth just made him angry so we went with modeling behavior.

Honestly, I didn't see an actual appetite out of him until close to a year when he started dropping bottles and then his appetite increased greatly. Just be prepared that he might hold food in his mouth that you will have to dig out at bedtime, sigh.

Also, my pediatrician was not concerned about solids until after our 1 year appointment and kept reminding me my LO was gaining weight and to just keep offering. He also tells me my LO will likely be a lazy eater his entire life and it's just his personality, which kills me because I am a very fast eater.

My son has never been a super motivated eater. At 19 months, the 3 days a month we get a growth spurt where he eats like a normal person are like the only times I don't feel like a crazy person!

We started solids early for his reflux (like at 5 months), but he probably didn't eat more than a tablespoon at a time for a good month or two. By 7 months, I think I could get him to eat like 2 tablespoons of puree at a time. He didn't even care to self-feed other than puffs and mum mums and melts (which just melt in his mouth) until he was like 10 or 11 months old. BLW did not work for us, because he just wasn't interested. We could get him to eat thicker/chunky purees by 8-ish months but only with lots of toys and distraction. I pushed on because he had weight gain issues, but yeah my son never took a paci, couldn't care less about Sophie the Giraffe, was never super into his bottles either - like he never even understood holding his own bottle up to feed himself so we never did sippy cups!

But yeah, I wouldn't worry just yet. My son is totally healthy and happy, able to self-feed and is learning how to use his utensils and seems just fine.

Both of my girls are like that--just not into eating, and especially not purees. For LO1, she finally got into eating after she turned 1. For LO 2 (8 months now), she's sliiightly getting into eating, but not as much as other babies her age.

She's good at eating coconut milk melts, puffs, and stuff like that--not interested in purees or harder to chew stuff.

DD does chew on things, but she was another one who didn't really get into food until 8 or 9 months. I would bring it up at the 9 month well visit if it's still an issue and try to relax until then.

Thanks ladies, this is making me feel better! @hummusgirl and @tanjowen, did you guys just keep at it and eventually they came around? A friend who also suggested maybe he wasn't ready told me to stop solids and start again in a few weeks. But I couldn't decide which way to go on this.

@tanjowen, with your son how did you get him to do BLW and eat puffs if he didn't put much in his mouth? Was he interested enough in eating those things to do it himself, or were you putting food in his mouth for him? Definitely sounds like my dude might be similar.

It's something I might mention at your next pediatrician appointment, but my LO didn't really get into solids until closer to 9 months. He also hated purees and we did BLW instead, and puffs at 7 months were a big hit because they took little effort to eat. My LO was/is a super lazy eater, and it seemed like eating just took way too much energy for him. He also is one that doesn't put anything in his mouth to chew on ever. Your LO might be the same.

My DS1 was kind of like this - it took a while for him to show any interest in food or chewing on things but he got there eventually. Around 9 months maybe? I'd give it another month or two.

Sounds like he's not quite ready yet. I hardly think anything you describe is cause for concern, especially given his age and the fact it's only been a month. But, as always you know your baby best and should follow your instincts.

I have a just-7-month-old who has been eating solids (purees only) for about 3 weeks. At 5.5 months, which is when I had started his older sister BLW, he seemed like SUCH a younger baby comparatively (as far as interest in us eating, general hand coordination) and I couldn't imagine him eating BLW foods on his own yet. So I waited.

At 6 months it seemed the same. The ped said to start anyway, so just after 6 months I started purees. He was not a fan the first few times and would just push everything out of his mouth with his tongue. Gradually with making eating/lip smacking noises I've gotten him to the point where he's happy when he's eating, but doesn't seem to actually be interested in or enjoy the food. It's more like he thinks it's fun because I'm making sounds and acting like it's exciting :) He doesn't like full baby-spoonfuls (he'll just push the food back out with his tongue), I have to keep the spoonfuls tiny, and even then he's just more moving the food around his mouth with his tongue. When he does swallow it, it seems accidental. After the first couple times I thought with practice it should be better in a week or two but there's virtually no improvement.

I'm not sure what to do here, like if this is just something some babies go through and I just need to give it more time? Or if this might be indicative of a bigger problem like a sensory issue? Of note, it didn't occur to me until he started teething right around 6 months that he is a baby that NEVER puts things in his mouth besides his hands and his paci. Not for exploration or soothing or anything. When I try to give him teething rings, toys, washcloths, baby toothbrushes, anything to show him how he can gnaw on it, he just pushes it away and makes a face. Since starting solids I've tried to just give him some teething wafers and other safe things to try to chew on when he's in his highchair and we're eating, and he just plays with it, never even tries to bring it to his mouth even after I try to show him.

This is weird, right? Or am I making a big deal out of something that will work itself out? Has anyone else had a baby that was like this with food?
