My first was IUGR. I was induced at 38 weeks with her, it was a super easy labor and she had no complications. She was 5lbs 2 oz, but left the hospital at 4lbs 11 oz. she's 19 months now and totally average sized. In the 50-60 percentiles. We are taking her to see if she has an expressive speech delay later this week though. Expressive speech delays are more common in IUGR babies for some reason.

If your first is IUGR, there is about a 25% reoccurrence, I believe. For this pregnancy, my doctor put me on baby aspirin right away because it has been shown to help with placental issues. This baby so far is trending larger than my first, but still losing in percentiles.

I know it can be scary, hang in there, do your kick counts and call your doctor if anything feels off. You are almost there!

We started having concerns around 35 weeks but everything still looked good in terms of blood flow, fluid etc. At 37 weeks we got the official IUGR diagnosis because fluid levels were borderline and we could see placenta calcification. Because blood flow was still good we were just monitoring everything. At 38 weeks I had a membrane sweep to see if we could get things going naturally but nothing happened. At 38+5 I had another sweep and later that day went into labor naturally but ended up with a c section due to fetal distress. I was semi expecting it because I knew that sometimes the little ones with low fluid don't tolerate labor well. My kiddo was 5.5 lbs and has usually hovered closer to 50th percentile. One thing that was really hard for us in the beginning was breastfeeding. He was just really sleepy and with his teeny tiny mouth it was hard for him to latch on. If I had to do it again I would have started pumping earlier to try and get my milk in faster and used an SNS but my hospital was not really supportive and gave him bottles causing nipple confusion etc. it ended up taking about 6 weeks to get it down and was very stressful because we were concerned about his weight but in the end it was worth it.

Hi--Just saw this. We were watched for IUGR all along due to placental issues. Our son came out at 37 weeks fairy small for his gestational age in the 9th percentile, but we were so grateful it wasn't more serious. One thing I wish we had done differently was be more aggressive about supplementing with formula until my milk came in. The doctors and nurses didn't really offer this as an option--meanwhile LO lost 12.5% of his bodyweight in the first few days, which is just too much for an already small guy. We started supplementing on Day 3 but wish we'd have done it right away. Would have saved a lot of worry and hard work later on to get it back up there.

For the record, these babies often catch up quickly. Mine has gone from the 9th percentile to around the 50th! Thinking of you!

Thanks to everyone for the responses! Taking them all in and helps me feel better. Just still a little overwhelmed worrying about what we'll hear at the next scan, so not much to say back. But wanted everyone to know I was reading and appreciate!

I wasn't aware I was carrying a small baby until 30w and he measured 5th percentile then (only like 3 lb 2 oz). I had another growth scan a few weeks later and he was only like 3 lbs 8 oz then. But I was put on bed rest for preterm labor and there was basically nothing else I could do. He was born 5 lbs 5 oz at 38.5 wks. They did some labs on my placenta for IUGR and they were normal. He was so tiny he wasn't even on the charts! He grew pretty quickly and got back to the 5th percentile and has stayed there his whole life. He's a perfectly healthy and proportionate 2 year old now. He's 24 lbs and 32 inches. My husband and I were both 5-6 lbs babies and are only 5"2 and 5"6 so in the end it's not surprising that we have a small child.

DS was measuring on schedule and at my 35 week scan, he was measuring at 32 weeks instead. I also had very low amniotic fluid levels. I did weekly dopplers and NST scans. All his vitals and organs looked fine in the ultrasounds, but he was measuring small. At 37 weeks, he hadn't grown any and my fluid levels were still low despite being on bedrest so I was induced later that week.

DS was born 4lbs 13oz and is almost 11 months old now! He remains in the less than 5 percentile compared to his peers, but he's growing and thriving. For his size, he's perfectly proportional, if not slightly chubbier! ha! Just compared to his peers of the same age is he "small". As the pedi calls it, he just started out lower on the launching pad; and has plenty of time to grow and stretch out! :)

Wishing you all the best; and if you want to talk more, feel free to wall me! <3

My son wasn't IUGR as he was measuring 6.5 lb at the end of my pregnancy. However, he wa born at 38 w 2 d at 4 lb 15 oz. my daughter (twins) was also much smaller than we thought. So ultrasounds can be wrong! My pediatrician is not worried about long term effects of my son being so little, just about getting him onto the growth charts. At our last appt he was growing on his own curve but still was at the zero percentile. We are supplementing both babies with high calorie (24 cal per oz) formula and still waking every 3 hrs during the day and 4 hrs at night (although they never go that long). My babies are only 5.5 weeks so I'm still new at this, but if you have any questions about my experience please let me know!

First pregnancy LO measured extremely small like under fifth percentile. I had twice weekly biophysical.profiles and a regular appointment from the time they caught it around 35 weeks I think. I was induced at 39 weeks simply due to size and the risk of problems with the placenta. DS was 5lbs 12oz. There were no issues with the placenta. He was and still is just very small but otherwise very healthy. It is super stressful but the vast majority of the time everything is perfectly fine. And it's usually easier to push out a small baby.

@runnerd: It must have been around the same point as you when I started to get anxious about it all. It's hard not being able to see what's going on in there and not being able to get answers. I do wish they'd do NSTs for you, though. But I can tell you he will do great once he's on the outside and if you're still considering FF it's probably a great choice in this situation. We just went back to the pediatrician today for a followup because LO lost a couple precious ounces and he'd gained it all back and then some.

@spaniellove: thanks for sharing! I haven't done NST, but I started weekly blood flow checks 2 weeks ago bc of the placenta concerns earlier in pregnancy.

Ahhh >6lb feels like a pipe dream right now! I'm hoping I'll be like you and his percentage won't continue to drop! I know his stomach was measuring behind but they didn't say what percentile.

That was me! Actually I also had a number of bleeding episodes and placenta previa. Baby's percentile dropped from 40th at 15 weeks to 14th at 19 weeks to between 11th and 14th throughout 3rd tri. Towards the end it was concerning that his abdominal circumference was in the 3rd percentile.

Are you doing nonstress tests and/or bloodflow Dopplers weekly? They should be monitoring your baby to make sure he continues to do well.

LO was born at 6lb 4oz and at a week old he is doing great. I was induced for high blood pressure that a MFM nurse first noticed at 37w6d and the OB noticed the next day. Since I actually went into TTC taking a med that can cause IUGR I was mentally prepared for him to be small, although 5.5lb is not too bad actually.

LO is right at the point where preemie sizes are tight but NB is way too big! I just had to order preemie diapers because his torso is small and NB is totally wrong for him.

FWIW, the MFM was never able to find a cause but the OB found an area of scarring on the placenta when he delivered it and felt that might have been it.

well trying to keep myself from freaking out so wanting to see if anyone else has experiences to share!

i've been seeing specialist since 15 weeks bc of second tri bleeding and possible placenta issue. baby has measured on small side pretty consistently for awhile at 25th percentile, but has been otherwise healthy, and no further signs of placenta issue.

then today's specialist growth scan appt at 35 weeks (a little over 4 weeks since last growth scan), his growth has fallen into 11th percentile (his estimated weight gain is only 1lb 2oz since 30.5 weeks). At this point he is healthy, and all the vitals look good. I'm being seen weekly already. In 2 weeks they will do another growth and if is growth rate has fallen too much again, I'll be induced at 37 weeks.

I'm sort of freaking out, not about being induced or whether he is going to be ok per say, but it sounds like even if I go all the way to 40 weeks, he is going to be SMALL, like at best case scenario 5.5lbs, so probably smaller.

Can anyone share their experiences with small baby, being induced for small baby and/or IUGR?
