We just switched to the bigger convertible carseat in our teensy Honda Fit. It's definitely a little challenging to get our LO into it, and she's still really small. But we are 6 months away from being paid off, so I think we are just going to suck it up!

@chopsuey119: DH has a Prius and before we bought it I checked online to make sure a car seat would fit, even though were were a few years out from TTC.

I have a Honda Pilot, so no issues there - I think I could fit 5 car seats if I needed to, LOL

I agree...thecarseat lady is a super informative website for car seat info! We are looking at getting a new/newer car for baby...and I never even thought to bring a tape measure to measure back seats as we look at cars.

the only carseat that would fit in my Yaris was the BabyTrend infant seat or a MaxiCosi. they didn't have the MaxiCosi to try in my car when I was looking, so we opted for the BabyTrend since he won't have it forever. I figure when he's in a convertible seat and forward-facing, we'll have more options.

I did purchase a new car though when he turned 4 months old, I was all set with squeezing into the Yaris. I got a Prius and it's still kind of cramped but much better.

We have a compact 4-door. It only fits in the back of the passenger seat. I'll be a pain when it's time to upgrade into a larger car seat, but I figure we'll worry about that in a few months. Because of this, we didn't buy one of those convertible/upgrade-able seats.

I'm surprised you managed to get a carseat into a Mazda 3 at all! Hubby and I were car shopping last month and I loved the Mazda 3, but knew it would be a no-go when I saw how small the backseat is.

Look for European makers of car seats, like Maxi Cosi. They're made for smaller European cars and they have models available in the US.

I have a Subaru Forrester, but DH has a 2-door VW GTI. He'll be caring for DD next month, so the car seat will have to go in his tiny car. We bought a Chicco Keyfit, b/c it does fit in DH's car, but it's still quite a tight fit. He'll be getting a new car sometime in the fall, but in the meantime we're making do.

I'm having the same problem! We have so far solved it by not getting a car seat yet O_o (not due u til August)

We've got a Honda insight, and all the seats we've tried have had to have the front seat so far forward that DH wouldn't be able to sit in it. Sigh.

I'm considering getting a new car. I have a Mini Cooper S. It's been okay with the infant seat - the front passenger seat is a little cramped, but not awful. But I'm really not looking forward to switching to the rear-facing convertible seat. I'm keeping her in the infant seat as long as possible.

I think the trick usually is to do a search for your car and infant seats, I found this link that might be helpful:
http://www.car-seat.org/showthread.php?t=28724

Certain seats install better in different cars so definitely try a few out if you can and look it up. It looks like once you are ready to switch to a convertible it should make a big difference in your car.

Our Britax B-Safe barely fits in the middle seat of my Honda Fit. It's fine for one kid, but we plan on getting a Toyota highlander before we have a second baby.

@mediagirl: I was also very unsure about the uncoolness of the minivan.... but it's soooooo worth it. We're a 4 person family (well 3 and a dog who comes everywhere with us) so we needed more room. I understand about the car payments though. Luckily I was still driving my first car that my parents bought me, so we were just able to trade in DH's car, he drives mine, and we still have the same payment.

We put the car seat into my Mazda 3 the other day. It's behind the passenger seat and we practically have to push the seat all the way up to get it to fit. Makes for a tight fit for anyone in that passenger seat.

Do you have a small car? How do you deal with the car seat situation?
