Here's what it looks like in person. We looked at some tables (round too), but this fit our size needs perfectly. The 5 ft sides could fit another chair, but we stuck with four.

Generally speaking, a round table can seat more people in a smaller footprint so that's a good place to start looking!

@purplelilac: That's a beautiful table!

We had an awakward small space in our kitchen so we had my uncle build a booth and we LOVE it. It can comfortable sit 3 on each side and a chair/high chair on the end.

I have a drop leaf table that was my parents in our dining area. It's a little too big, but we make it work.

When we were showing our townhouse before we sold it, our realtor talked us into buying a round table (because it makes a room look bigger). I ended up finding a TON of pedestal tables at Goodwill and got one for like $25. We still have it and use it to drop mail on near our garage (and to put food on when we have guests over. It's in the room next to the dining room on the other side of a ledge)

I'm not really a thrifty shopper, but this table was totally worth the trip to goodwill! The top is in amazing shape. The pedestal could use a coat of paint (it was spraypainted white...and not all that well), but we've lived with it. We might keep it for if/when we have kids because it's so hard to place chairs around the drop leaf table because the legs are in inconvenient places.

we have a small eating area separated from the kitchen by a peninsula (with the stove on it, not for sitting at). We've got a long farmhouse style table that is pretty narrow, but can become wider with two leaves. We have a bench on either side, and a keekaroo high chair at the end. I'm not crazy about the benches- they are nice in theory and I love that they tuck in. But when you have a lot of people over for dinner it gets pretty awkward. Its also a little hard for my almost-4 year old to sit on, and doesn't accommodate a booster.

A separate dining room or a larger open-concept layout is a must for our next house, at that point I'd like to get a set of chairs and be done with the benches (or at least on one side)- but right now they do work pretty well for the small space.

We have the ikea Jokkmokk table and chair set for our smallish eat in kitchen. I love it because we can pull the table out and add 2 extra chairs so it will seat 6 cozily. I hope to have a dining room when we buy a house so we went super budget (the whole set is only $150 but doesn't look tacky) and this table will be a kitchen only table or a grownup work table

This is our little eating nook between our kitchen and family room. I love the look of our set, but in hindsight would have gotten this extendable pedestal table from IKEA. We actually have a formal dining room but haven't furnished it yet, so this has been our only eating space for more than a year. An option to extend the table would have been awesome for guests or big meals!

Our dining area is in the living room (well, it's all one space with our kitchen too), and we still have a small Ikea glass table and some cheap Target.com chairs we bought when we lived in a smaller 1 bedroom apartment. I actually like the table a lot (easy to clean, cheap, modern), but the chairs aren't my favorite and the whole thing is a smidge too small for our current space.

I had the same table in a different size in my old house and liked it there too, although my ideal table for our current space is a modern oval table with modern chairs (like the last pic).

1st two pics are Ikea table in current house. 3rd pic is the same Ikea table (slightly bigger) in my pre-marriage house. Last picture is my ideal table.

Our dining space is in the living room. The table is from CB2 and it seats four. The chairs are 2 Stokke Tripps Trapps, 1 Ikea metal chair and one Philippe Stark Masters chair. I like the look of mismatched chairs. I love the table and I like the chairs. I would pick different adult chairs in the future though (different style).
