What @plantains wrote, get the closet organized very well, OR turn that into a study nook with a built in desk and shelves and then do a loft bed with drawers underneath.

Check out the IKEA kura loft bed. We are getting it as a small bunk bed for my boys but I've seen it as a bed with a dresser under to save space. I've also seen a lot of ways people customize them for their room.

Skip the dresser and get some good closet organization from the container store. Twin beds are perfect and way roomier than you think. I prefer to have one with a lower profile so that the room still looks spacious.

@Bao: IKEA has some that are lower than a top bunk would be but high enough for air flow.

@Bao: LO is really tall (99th percentile at 2.5) and he still fits fine in his toddler bed at 3 and I think prob will for another 2 years.

What about a toddler bed instead of a twin bed? Not a long term solution, but she can stay in it til 5 or 6 years old. That's what we have in LO1's room, since he is sharing with LO2 and it's a very small space as well.

@regberadaisy: It's like a small wall vent...if I block it it won't get any heat up there. It already lingers around 63 when it's 67 downstairs.

DD1's current room is maaaaaybe 8x11? On the two short ends are the baseboard heater/window and opposite it the door to the room. Then on one long end adjacent to the room door are two doors to two small closets. Her twin was pushed into the corner without doors or windows. The dresser in front of he window and bookcase kitty corner at the foot of the bed. I much preferred this way because it gave her a nice open area in the middle. But DH wanted to change it up and now the bed is in front of the window, bookcase kitty corner to the window. Dresser on the short wall where the door is. I'm not a fan because it feels so cramped now with no open space.
Anyway, utilize walls! The dresser or bookcase can go in front of the heater. Just leave room.

@sorrycharlie: I'll have to look that up. I probably could do something in her closet for clothes...it's just a closet with a regular bedroom door on it. I wonder if we couldn't build some shelving for her pants/pajamas and do a basket for socks and what not. Her shirts are already hung up in there. The dresser is ugly anyway ;)

What about those mini loft beds that IKEA has? They aren't far off the floor at all. How's her closet - can you ditch the bureau and use that? My sisters room is barely bigger than her twin sized bed. She just crams it all in lol

LO2 has a VERY small room. There is a heat vent right in the middle of one wall so it makes it even more difficult to work with. She is in her crib now, but eventually she will need a bigger bed, at least a twin. I have no idea how I will fit a twin bed, her dresser and a bookshelf in there. That's all she has right now. It works fine with a crib obviously, but I don't want her to have nothing in her room at all.

Any ideas for making a really small space work? We have no plans of moving and the only other option is to move rooms around and that would be a huge pain since one room is on the main floor, away from the other 3.
