Magnatiles or Tegu blocks if they don't have them.

If they do, I second the suggestion for either a membership or a class/lessons of some kind. Even for a one year old, it could be something like a mom and me music class, a swimming thing, etc.

@wrkbrk: We live small and have a 2 y.o. so I feel like I understand! We have small toys, toys that tuck away easily and also a couple toys that sit out but kind of blend in with the house. For example, DS has a “large” Grimm’s Rainbow Stacker in our living room and it’s such a cool piece that it’s not like having a toy kitchen. Same could go with the Grimm towers and blocks. His Little Tykes pushcar has been a hit for the last 13 months. It’s his biggest toy but it tucks away. He rides it around our little space, though you might not want to assume that it “fits” for their home and lifestyle without asking. Music and books are equally able to be tucked away! Similar to the VTech cars, my DS loves the VTech books!

@JCCovi: @wrkbrk: I can second that these are really fun - we got a set when my older kids were 1 or 2, and they still come out all the time (6, 4, and 2 years). Ours are a pretty basic amazon set - they don't need to be crazy expensive. They use them with instruments, dress up, as bandages playing doctor, playing peekaboo, etc. Possibilities are endless.

Waldorf play silks are so fun for that age but will also last them many years and take up basically no space at all. We have these and even though they aren’t real silk they have gotten tons of love for years now.

@wrkbrk: we recently moved out of a NYC apartment :) for Christmas last year my son was 15 months and he LOVED those Vtech gogo cars--my aunt gave him some race cars and some emergency vehicles. They're obnoxious because they sing and light up, but they have an off-switch and the kiddo went crazy for them and still plays with them all the time. Super small and easily stored and diaper-bag portable.

What about something like a book. You could do something that you enjoyed as a kid and write a nice note inside the cover. Otherwise I would ask his parents for something practical.

Highlights makes a lightweight board book "magazine" targeting this age group called BabyBug that is a fun subscription gift. They can recycle it or pass it on to a friend each month when they finish if they don't want to keep the old issues around.

Non-specifically...not sure how much you want to spend, but what about passes to a play space, or membership to a museum/zoo/garden in their part of NYC? As a former NYC dweller, I know it is sooo hard to manage toy influx - if you really want to get him a toy, would you be willing to ask his parents what's on the wish list? I know it's less exciting than a surprise, but at least what you buy is sure to be a hit.

Happy almost holiday season folks! Easy question. What are some ideas for Christmas gifts for my soon to be one year old nephew (ten months at Christmas time) that don’t take up a ton of space? They live in a tiny NYC apartment and I know my sister doesn’t want to be overwhelmed with stuff. But gift cards seem so blah. Thank you!!
