I did end up throwing my hat into the ring for a job at our community college. The job posting closed at midnight Thursday and I hit submit a little after 10 pm. We'll see what happens.

@cmomma17: um, that blows. I would definitely make the president aware that.the "solutions" you are being offered are not real fixes. Don't give up-THEY are wrong here, not you.

I'm also getting the cold shoulder at work today. My boss and my other co worker have barely spoken to me all day. Being here is pointless because I can't complete any of my current projects without input from my boss and she's not giving me any.
I was out of the office yesterday (Monday), so I wonder if the president contacted my boss then.

@cmomma17: Ugh, that sucks. Especially because it's not like you need the room for hours at a time! You need it a few times a day for like 30 minutes. Your boss blows. I hope they're able to find you something reasonable close to your office soon.

@Adira: so the room we have in-office is for when we proctor exams. It has four really nice cubicles in it. I am the main person who schedules and proctors the exams so I could control the times the room is used. My boss says no. Students come first.

I likely won't be allowed to use the rooms anways because they won't issue me a key so it doesn't matter. But still .... yucky.

Well ladies, the HR lady came down today to show me potential rooms in my building. It didn't go great. Basically there are two dusty mechanical/electrical storage type closets. Pretty dirty. And they are occassionally used by other people. And then we found out I wouldn't be allowed to have a key to them anyways, so someone from a different office would have to let me in twice a day every day.
Yeah .... that's not going to work. Back to square one.

I gave HR permission to push again (against my boss) for permission to pump in the room that is located IN our office! She will probably refuse again. HR lady also mentioned that she knows "the president is aware of the situation." ;)

@cmomma17: I'm sorry your job doesn't seem to work that way! If you are slated for 40 hrs/wk average and they are exploiting you for more, that is a whole separate problem. :(

My average work week is supposed to be 60ish hours, and when I go above that I know I have some leeway to flex down when I can.

I know you have a good head on your shoulders and will figure out what works best for you and your family. For me career advancement never left the agenda, but I understand why others may feel differently :)

@Mrs. Jacks: I guess I'm in a place in my life where career advancement is not a huge priority. Of course I say that easily now as my sweet baby is nursing while I type. While I am at work, I miss him, but I still enjoy working and am motivated to excel there too. I really go back and forth on the issue!

Working nights and weekends does not open up any daytime flexibility for me. I even felt harassed about using my sick time for prenatal appointments (and I scheduled them as early as possible). Your situation does sound great. If I had that flexibility I would totally work nights and weekends as needed. I'd love a job where I could come in at 7 and leave at 3 one week if LO needed me in the afternoon, or not come in until 10 if he had a doctors appointment, etc.

@78h2o: like you, I'd definitely want a different work situation when LO starts school. DH already works weekends and evenings because he is in retail so we really need me to have more of a mon-fri office hours type job. Our childcare is our moms and we don't want to over burden them.

DH even suggested letting my boss and VP know that I am thinking about needing to switch to something more baby-friendly and asking for their help/support.

This is great news, so happy things are on the up and up. Also, it doesn't hurt to always have your resume ready and to be aware of the options out there and know what you are worth! And it is good to be thinking about those trades between working late vs stability, etc like you are doing. Even if they aren't issues now, it is very possible they will become factors later and it is good to start thinking about what will work best for you.

I guess I am in the camp that a good job with night and weekend work is better than a job with no potential for advancement.

I still have work life balance, but it looks different for me than other people. The nights and weekends provide me with some flexibility during the week to go to school functions, do drop off or pick up or take a Friday to do playdates. I wouldn't have expected that to be the case, but it really does work well for us.

@cmomma17: so happy they found a room in your building. Going across campus sounded like such an unnecessary PITA!!!! Props for you for standing up for yourself (and other women in your shoes).

I don't think it hurts to apply for the other job, but I agree with others that you might want to consider staying put given your benefits. Maybe you could stay until you get your masters and finish having kids? I have to work two nights a week and while it's a huge pain (I used to have to get a babysitter after daycare because my husband couldn't watch my LO), it's worth it in the long run. My LO doesn't miss me in the evening because she's sleeping anyway. In my case, working long days means I have two full days off during the week to spend with her... I know it's not the same in your case, but if it is only an occasional thing, it might be workable. My plan is to switch jobs/schedules by the time she's in school (so 4.5 years from now) so I can pick her up from the bus, etc.

I like MrBee's idea! I'm generally with @Mrs. Jacks: about huge life changes. It does sound like weekends/nights aren't sustainable, but the benefits of your university in general sound outstanding! In my first months back at work, I wanted to quit and get a new job. I think it's a really hard adjustment to leave your baby and the allure of a different job where things will be "better" is strong. What are the chances that in the next year or so there'd be a position at your current university with better hours?

Your president should be very concerned! But it sounds like things may work out for you. And I would definitely stay put for the moment. Being so close to home, plus the opportunity to get a FREE masters degree (!!!), seem to outweigh almost everything else. And anytime you switch jobs, you're guaranteed to have to work harder for a good amount of time if for no other reason than to establish your worth. (Ummm... Clearly I'm in the camp that doesn't want to work harder.)

@Mrs. Jacks: my boss has been the problem since day one (beyond the pumping issues) and I already applied for jobs before. Had an interview for a different position on campus while pregnant but didn't get it. :( Beyond the awful boss, I don't think I can stay in my position long term with small children. The demands of evening and weekend work, and suddenly staying late or coming in early aren't going to work. I like your advice though.

Thanks to everyone! I think I will throw my hat in the ring for the community college job just in case. I may not even get an interview, or I might learn more about the position and not want it. Or it could be perfect! More $ would be nice!
Even though I dislike my boss and current position it would be hard to walk away from the excellent benefits at this university! I live seven minutes from work, free education for me, DH and all LO's, discounted rate at an amazing university-run daycare when LO gets bigger...

@T.H.O.U.: @mrs. Lemon-lime: thanks! I forgot to add that HR also emailed me and said the found a room in my building I can pump in during the academic year. If you remember, they had until August 1 to figure that out. Also, a pregnant co worker thanked me because she said my situation helped her and her supervisor start talking about what it will be like when she returns from maternity leave. :)
