They do require a hub, but once you set it up, you never have to touch it again. They're less expensive than the Hue bulbs and we haven't had any issues with them. We have a smart plug but the lamp is currently using an extension cord. The smart plug we have does not recommend using it with an extension cord. The philips hue seems like a popular choice but I wasn't sure I wanted to commit to the hub. We have them on a few lamps. They do require a hub. Alternatively you could just do an amazon smart plug on whatever fixture you want to control. I'm looking for bulbs that are compatible with the amazon echo so DD can ask to turn the lights on. </p> <p>Any one have smart bulbs they love? Or that they would avoid? Do you use ones that require a hub? </p>
