I've always been an Android person, but I was this close to caving and getting an iPhone because of bad luck with my previous Android phones. Only the huge phones (like my husband's) seemed to work well and I wanted something that fits in my pocket, so size was a big factor for me in considering an iPhone. My Moto X is about the size of an iPhone 5, but the screen is actually larger. It uses a pure Android OS (most layer a skin over the UI that makes operation clunkier) and never hangs like my old phones would. It just works and works quickly. Google Now is great and is completely hands-free (although I think this is now also true of Siri).
