I never thought of a smash cake as being a blog thing. I had one at my first birthday! We didn't even have a party. We originally planned on it just being me, DH, &amp; DS (ended up celebrating with a couple of friends and their two girls) and still bought one. It was only $5 for an eighth of a sheet cake and it was perfect. DS loved it and got mad when I tried to take the cake from him! I would suggest getting whipped frosting. That's what I originally ordered but there was a miscommunication in the bakery and we ended up with buttercream. It inevitably turns into a cake smash giant mess. I'm not a fan of that kind of super sweet bakery icing and excess sugar at that age, but I know there are recipes for a less sweet banana or pumpkin based cake, and I think I might prefer to do that. My nephew was crazy cute at his. He shoveled so much cake into his mouth, it was adorable. And he loooves sugar now. I'm just not sure if i really want to expose my kid to more than just a bite maybe. haven't decided yet, but leaning towards a strong no on the cake.
