A friend of mine worked through this and I think she has made a ton of friends since then.
I also instinctively don't trust people with RBF. I think they are just thinking something negative to themselves to repeat it aloud later.
I definitely am not the 'always smiling' person I used to be a few years ago. Good to know I can/should work on it.

@mrbee: RDF? :shocked:

I have a hard time with this because I prefer not to smile. I feel like when I smile it looks forced so I like having my face neutral. It's so hard. I have no advice. Just thought my response above was funny. ;-)

I'm the opposite. I cant stop smiling at people. I think its a nervous thing - I smile at strangers in the street, I say random things to people. People think I'm weird.

I am the other way, I always seam to look approachable and happy. I have to remind myself to put on the 'leave me the f alone' face when I am walking home late or other times I just want quiet. Everyone ALWAYS asks me for directions...

@Boogs: Smiling is like exercise: I don't like doing it, but can't argue with the results!

There's a guy at work who always tells me I need to smile more and it pisses me off. Having RBF is hard! :wink:
I am not sure if having RBF is a reason I try to compliment people more or tell them thank you, "I appreciate..."

Uh, yes - RBF here. RBF has its perks, like I avoided most of the intrusive, nasty comments people make to pregnant women and mothers, ha!

At work I'm on video conferences every day and I spend the time reminding myself to smile, in order to appear neural and happy. :meh:

I have the biggest RBF, like @Mrs. Champagne: I really wish I was someone who just looked naturally happy.

On the other end of the spectrum, my husband once had someone he worked with who told him he smiled TOO much. You just can't win I guess!

Oh man I always look so pissed! It feels so fake to be smiling. I wish I was someone who naturally looked happy or pleasant!

I think I have the same issue and always forget to make myself smile. I feel foolish smiling all the time, but apparently it is more pleasant to others? IDK

My "resting face" is not very friendly... it's basically a male RBF.

Someone I work with told me that I should smile more, so that I was more approachable and so I didn't "look so serious all of the time." I was annoyed (although my RBF hid it, since I already look annoyed all of the time). But just to prove them wrong, I figured I'd smile more for a few days and see if anyone noticed.

Well I have been smiling for 2 weeks straight now, and the results have been surprising (to me). All this smiling is actually working, ugh. I must be more approachable, because people are talking to me more and being much more warm towards me. I guess my RBF really was keeping people away. I'm an introvert, so maybe that was my goal all along - who knows.

So now I'm going to try and keep this smiling thing up. Does this mean I have to smile through my RBF for the rest of my life? Does anyone else have to smile just to look vaguely friendly-ish?
