We also have a smoker and use it occasionally. Once we use it we usually have food for at least two meals so it helps in that regard to food prep but I wouldn't get it for the sole purpose of that.

@MediaNaranja: you can't get a good sear- but when I need one I toss it on cast iron first. It does make a nice crust- and you can see the smoke ring. If you like smoke flavor it can't be beat. Could you garage your gas grill for a summer? Ours have been sitting unused since we got the Traeger. There are lots of recipes and resources online.

@MamaG: We have the Kamodo Joe, so similar - love it SO MUCH.

We looove our smoker. We don't use a gas grill anymore, just do grilling on our smoker when we need to. I don't see the smoker as a 'necessity', but a luxury item. It's fun to use, makes DELICIOUS meat, and can be a fun social thing (sit outside all day Saturday with friends, drinking beer and playing yard games while snacking on smoked meat all day)

@Mrs D: My husband loves his smoker, but it definitely takes a lot of his attention and is an all day event. We use it at least once a week to smoke ribs or pork and I enjoy the taste. We generally have enough left over to make pulled pork sandwiches for 2 meals, so I can see how it helps with meal prep that way.

We have a cheap one (like $50). You do have to keep an eye on it to make sure it maintains temperature. Generally, you're looking at 4+ hours to cook some meat. One of my favorites is chicken wings. DH will put them on the smoker for about 2 hours, which gives them a great flavor and finish them on the grill for a few minutes.

I'm looking at buying DH a nicer one for Father's Day that can set the temp and require a little less oversight. It's not something we use terribly often. Probably 5-7 times/year.

Higher end models may be more of a replacement for a grill with varying options, but ours definitely doesn't serve that purpose.

@Mrs D: I mean, we have a basic smoker. It's not like fancy automated systems. So we do have to check on it and make sure the proper temp is maintained. So it's not like we can put it in the smoker and leave the house for 8 hours.

@T.H.O.U.: LOl! We usually throw something in the smoker when we will be home and outside doing things anyway. DH will usually be doing lawn work and then occasionally checking on it.

I love smoked ribs, brisket, pork tenderloin and fish! Everything and anything! Low and slow and smokey!

@youboots: I just won a Traeger in a drawing and am feeling slightly intimidated and debating whether to keep or sell. We have a tiny patio and room for only one grill. Is there a steep learning curve? How is it better than a gas grill? We cook outside 3-5x/week in summer. Can you still get a good sear on a steak?

It hasn't been delivered yet but we should have it by this weekend....

I guess thats another perk I am thinking...it may incentivize DH to cook more...he does all the grilling...if I could get him to take over even more of the food prep it would be a win!

DH got one last summer and he LOVES that thing. And I will say; smoked food is pretty good! For me personally, I can live without it; but DH uses that and the grill a lot in the summer. We also entertain and host a lot so it's great to have.

We have a Big Green Egg and my husband loves it. He will often spend several hours on the weekend grilling/smoking our meat for a week (or two). Once it's done he will package it up and vacuum seal and either refrigerate or freeze. During the week it's an exercise of re-heating and making our sides.

He'll also do a brisket or a pork shoulder less frequently.

I'm not sure it's really a time saver, but we love smoked and grilled meats.

I have a Traeger and have not used a gas BBQ in 2 years. I cook everything on it. It's a higher end motel that you turn to a certain tempature so it's like having an outdoor oven. It only smokes on the smoke setting. Life changing!
