I work at a hospital and people stand right outside the doors smoking. I actually said something once to a crowd of 3-4 people sitting right outside the one building who were just sitting there smoking. The building is where the OB/GYN offices are, so pregnant women are going in and out of there constantly. I don't usually say something, but this was really bad - it was like all 3-4 of them had been sitting there chain-smoking for 20 minutes. I asked them to please move, since this is the OB building. They actually did it without much resistance. Smoking is a personal choice, but at least respect others who don't want to breathe/walk through your smoke! I was leaving my OB's office last week and someone was smoking right outside the doorway! I was so aggravated and almost said something but they didn't speak English anyway. I used to live by a hospital and was always amazed at how many nurses would be standing down by the parking garage smoking (had to be away from doors). It really bothered me that I sometimes work in a hospital and you had to walk through this cloud of smoke to get inside; most of the smokers were patients who left their oxygen tanks in a "holding" area inside. Because they're outside, we can't do anything about it. Worst of all, my son's nursery window is right above the entrance (on the 3rd floor), so when they stand outside and smoke it goes right into his room. We have to keep the window closed, which is a pain given that we don't have A/C. The other night, my hubs smelled smoke wafting into our living room and poured a glass of water out the open window before slamming it shut! I usually hold my breathe and walk really fast. I know some states or cities that have laws against smoking within a certain feet of buildings. Check your local statutes, many states have laws against smoking right outside office buildings. You could also bring the issue to your comapny's HR or legal team. The other day at the beach someone came near where I was sitting at a picnic table with my LO, said hi to my LO so it's not like they didn't know there was a baby there, and then lit up a cigarette. I've started holding my breath and mumbling when these smokers try to talk to me and chat as I'm trying to enter or exit. its really starting to annoy me now. Does it bother you?
