Did you have a conversation with her beforehand about smoking around the baby?

I mean..... if that wasn't something you brought up, some people just don't think about it. Going forward, Id just make it very clear that it's unacceptable.

Ugh i would be so mad. Did you think she had quit before?

She might have thought that it was NBD since it wasn't brought up with her before but all you can do is address it in the future and ask her what happened b/c your nursery and LO smell and you're upset about it. Maybe she'll be very apologetic or maybe she'll be very defensive. Either way, you need some hard rules for the future. Both my parents smoke and it's so frustrating when my daughter smells like it, despite our best efforts to prevent. Even though my mom doesn't smoke in the house, the smell follows her everywhere. I ask that she wash her mouth out and wash her hands and cover her hair up while she smoked before holding E as a newborn.

My inlaws smoke. We had similar requirements like @avivoca: on them before handling the baby. It'll be the same when this one arrives. I could still smell it on my LO after she held him. The hard part was that my husband got defensive of them because of these accommodations I wanted made to protect our child. When we visit them, they smoke outside. We make sure not to have LO near them when they do. This last visit, my husband commented on the fact that even though they tried to air out the car, it still smelled of smoke.

I'd be really upset! Like @avivoca suggests, I'd ask her to take the proper steps if she wants to visit with the baby. There is no reason to smoke then hold the baby. I have friends that smoke and they never even ask to hold or be near my girls if they have had a smoke. It's just not worth the risk!

Knowing many smokers, I would do something similar to @avivoca:

I think it's one thing to smoke (when you're only affecting yourself). It's a totally different situation if you're smoking in doors or smoking so much outside that you're causing the inside of a house to smell.

and if she's staying at your house, I don't think it's at all too much to ask that she change clothes/shower between smoking and taking care of your child.

wow, i hope she did not smoke IN the nursery or in your home at all, i would also be very upset with that. If she went outside and the smell just lingered inside, i would talk to her about it and ask if she could refrain from smoking while visiting with your baby or come up with another solution like @avivoca:

I would be very upset. Did she smoke in the nursery?

We have a rule at our house of absolutely no smoking inside, and if you must smoke, you have to go outside and wear a jacket. When they come in, they have to wash their hands/rinse their mouth before they can hold baby.

Having a talk with her is probably the best way to handle it. I would arm yourself with some trustworthy articles regarding 3rd hand smoke and babies and let her know that you don't appreciate her putting your baby's health in danger.

I could seriously just cry, I am mad and sad. My mom and my sister came to visit for the weekend and my sister was sleeping in the nursery (baby was in my room) and my sister apparently still smokes. I didn't smell it on her until today and I know she couldn't have been smoking much. But basically I left the baby with her and my mom for an hour this morning and when I can't back my sister smelled of smoke and was holding the baby and the nursery smells.

Now what? I am mad and worried about the smell in the nursery lingering. I know there tiny exposure to smoke isn't enough to be actually concerned about but I am so mad she would put my baby's health in danger- especially when my dad died of smoking complications and my other sister has major genetic lung health issues.
