@ladybee: “Calamity Days” is a great way to put it! That's crazy that you had hot days and snow days, though I guess that’s like us having hurricane days and snow days.

@babypugs: It’s so interesting that there are so many ways that daycares are run.

@YouGotMe: Yeah! You’re on mat leave! I haven’t kept up!

@MamaCate: So well put. Yes, I realize that there are many layers here to our situation! I’m afraid the decision could not have been a mere oversight because our daycare director was involved. She said that she advocated her best, but the administration chose what they chose. I guess I’d just like to know why they couldn’t make it a win-win for all. Thanks for helping me keep it constructive.

@misolee: Hearing this — and that you’re in the South and no doubt effected by this wild weather year — is helpful. Plus just knowing that other daycares are probably facing some challenges. I think the money thing that you mentioned is part of what bothers me. We don’t know any other families well at daycare yet so right now we feel like the only ones who are unhappy about the situation.

@AMORINI

Some parents at my school started a petition. We are in the South too and I know exactly what you're talking about. The teachers did not get paid during these "snow days" and even though they follow the local school calendar, in reality, the school is private and not part of the local school system. One of the points the petition made was: we went one full week in August and paid tuition for it (understandably). We missed more than one week of school so either one week should be credited or missed days should have makeup days. There are "teacher work days" that the local school gets off that can be used for makeup if needed but the school isn't considering. Basically, the petition was stating that want to know where the money is going if teachers are not getting paid.

Even though it's a half day program at a local church, it's the biggest preschool in the area with over 400 students. Parents collectively have started a dialogue with the school to see if they can get things done.

@Amorini: it is helpful to hear more about your situation and where you are coming from and I think the focus on advocating for the future sounds like a productive outlet for your frustration.

Based on what you described, my guess would be that this was the school making a decision that works for them re:make up days without taking the daycare side into account. My hope, without knowing the dynamics, would be that this was a genuine oversight—I can imagine them just needing to come up with a plan and get it out and they forgot to consider the daycare portion. Going off that, I would advocate for helping the school find a way to make decisions like this in the future that are able to applied across the board to both school and daycare alike. This should be a logical sell—closures affect both sides equally so make up days should be structured the same. So I would try to talk to the administration about how the decision making can be changed. Does that seem like a possible starting point?

LO1’s daycare (that she isn’t attending right now because I am on mat leave) is affiliated with the University I work at. 80% of the daycare kids are the kids of students or staff. The daycare only closes when the University is closed.

They university has only ever cancelled night classes due to weather and the daycare Is closed before night classes start. They closed early once because of the weather.

We pay monthly (based on being there all year) no matter what.

When the daycare closes for any reason, we do not get reimbursed nor do they make up the days. I actually assumed that all daycares were the same way and now I'm discontent knowing that some aren't!

I hope the teachers get paid since we're paying, but I have no idea. Our daycare provides insurance and benefits, so I imagine they're pretty decent to their employees on weather days.

@DesertDreams88: I am contracted for 187 days from 8:45am-4:00pm with an hour lunch. The state of Ohio says that schools have to go a certain number of hours. Based on my contract, my distinct has an extra 20 days worth of hours built in that we can use for weather. Middle has 10 and high school has 8. We go from August 12thish to may 31st. Last year we use zero calamity days and we had to work the whole school calendar. This year we’ve used 7 days between hot days and snow days.

Thanks for your input, one and all! Interesting and varied experiences with this one.

Just a clarification that an unplanned closure day here and there over a year is no big deal in my mind. We were closed an entire week and evacuated for Irma and before that had multiple early pick-ups for tornado watches over the summer. Totally cool with that. I want to be with my kid when the weather is scary! The whole thing didn’t even cross my mind until the 7th and 8th full closure day with the recent Southern snowfall. It snowed for 4 hours and accumulated to 1 inch. After one day, the roads were clear, but it was very cold. Schools were closed for three days. :meh: I live in the South but I’m from the Northeast and it just didn’t really justify a closure for even two days, let alone three. (Waiting for the bus in the freezing cold on snowy mornings is one of my childhood memories!) Meanwhile we were required to show up at work or else take PTO for each and every day. From what some of you shared, you know exactly what I mean!

Our daycare is part of a K-12 private school that mostly follows the public school schedule and closures. To no surprise, there are a lot of days off that I don’t get off for work like Presidents Day, Columbus Day and several others. The daycare also has in-service days throughout the year and also a full in-service week during the summer before the new school year begins. And, yep, we pay for all of it...a full year (monthly payments) including those closed days. They do not give a flex week of vacation. All part of what we signed up for. So the fact that there are extra in-service days (not to mention President’s Day), in my thinking, creates the possibility for make-up days. I hope that makes sense of why I think/know that there are options.

Apparently when deciding on make-up days after our 1 inch Snowmageddon, the K-12 school adminstration chose days that the daycare was already open and therefore couldn’t makeup. :bummed: Because the daycare provides services for teachers’ kids, they can’t close the daycare when the school is in session. I don’t know why they didn’t coordinate it and make it work out on other days when they had the option. Now the only remaining option is the in-service week in the summer when school is already out. When I asked about that as a possibility, I didn’t get a response. It may legitimately be out of the question, but I thought it was worth asking.

For some reason, this issue has really upset me with our daycare. While it may be just the “way it is,” something feels out of balance in this particular situation. We pay SO much it’s nuts as it is and the school/daycare isn’t hurting so it’s hard to mentally write-off. I would like to channel my frustration into advocating for a possible policy change that might help next time. Any suggestions are welcome!

Since daycares are year round I can't figure out how a make up day would work. Like on a Saturday? That wouldn't make sense since there's no law about being in daycare a certain number of days which is why schools do them. We still pay the same regardless of school closings. Ours rarely closes in bad weather and only takes main holidays off.

I’m so over snow days too. My kids go to half day preschool at a local church. They follow the local school calendar. The local schools make up. We do not. Local schools are decided based upon the WHOLE county. Our county is one of the biggest spans the entire Metro city area and closes for every little thing or mention of snow or ice. (We live in the South).

Since September, we’ve had 9 school days closed! Three were for possible “hurricane” like weather and the aftermath of it. Two were for actual snow (okay that was fine), one was for college football and the “threat of ice” (no kidding), and we had three days off this week bc some remote parts of the county was iced over. I’m pretty sure we haven’t gone a full week since like November. I know my teachers are paid hourly and they sent gettting paid...so not sure where the tuition is going.

Our daycare typically follows whatever the public school system does for our parish. I’m in Louisiana and there has been school closings in the past year or two from floods, cold weather (we can’t handle snow and ice), and possible tornadoes. I pay monthly and never asked for money back or a break on next month’s fees. I’m not really sure if they do that.

Our schools typically build in a few extra days in the year to cover hurricane days, etc. If they need to, they will reduce holidays.

My kids are in 2 different schools but neither of them offer any sort of makeup time or reduction in tuition if they close. I'm hoping that is because they pay the teachers all the same. It is very frustrating because they follow the public school schedule and close if they close. It bothers me because our public schools typically close for reasons that have nothing to do with my kids - like bus stops that are not accessible due to snow banks or schools that didn't get shoveled out.

Typically there is no makeup day or refund due to a weather related closing. The staff is paid regardless. However, they just closed for 8 days (semi-weather related - a burst pipe) and were able to make a insurance claim which will reimburse us for that closing, which we appreciate because it was a nightmare.

We have had 2 snow days where daycare was closed this year and yesterday they had a delayed opening due to icy roads. They have not offered any make up days and I am ok with it since it is a rare occurrence and they are usually quick to reopen even if the schools in the area are closed. If it happened more frequently I might have more of an issue with it.

I never thought about this. We don't get snow in Florida, but our daycare was closed for a week during/after Hurricane Irma (they were out of power - and most people in our area were as well). We pay monthly and didn't get any reduction in tuition or make up days or anything. But the difference with that was almost everyone was out of work/school and no power at home, either, so a little different than a snow day.

I don’t think my daycare does make up days and they’ve never closed since we have been there due to weather even after getting major storms (although we weren’t there when they go 7 feet during Snowvember—I’m sure they closed then).. 8 snow days sounds crazy! I think they just call in extra staff willing to travel if someone isn’t able to make it in. We’re not in the north country or anything but we are in a snowbelt in WNY and have had our fare share of days dropping the girls off in really bad conditions because we’re expected to be at work. I don’t even think they have a weather closing phone call chain. They definitely don’t close when schools do, and parents are able accordingto capacity have school agers stay there all day during snow days (they do before and after care with bus pick up and drop off).

@Adira: Our last possible day at my school (in MA) is June 30! When we had all that snow 3 years ago I think they had to go all the way until then (plus they made up 2 other days taking away other vaca days)! I was on maternity leave though and quite happy about that :)

We go to a private daycare, not affiliated with a public or private school, and they do not do make up days. When they're closed due to inclement weather, they're closed and we must pay for it regardless.

Most of the time this doesn't bother me. However, we have had a couple things recently which were kind of annoying. Several weeks ago the school closed due to the heat breaking. A friend of mine who's daughter goes there told me she just informed the director that they were reducing their tuition by $X because they weren't going to pay for the school to be closed in that situation.

And then a couple weeks ago the school was closed due to a snow storm (fine) but then they posted on their Facebook page that they might be closed the following day due to the sub zero temps and I was WTF. This is a suburban daycare, no one walks, no one takes a bus, everyone drives. And the parking lot is right in front of the door. It's literally a 5 second walk in. I couldn't understand why they'd be closed or how it affected safety. Ultimately they just decided to open late. Which I still don't get, but 🤷🏻‍♀️.

@DesertDreams88: Preschool/K doesn't have to make up the snow days because they are not required years. You don't have to send your kid to either. In my area K often doesn't even start at the same time as the other grades (a few days later) because they don't need to do all 180 days.

The way the built in days work varies by district; In my district we have 5 "built in" but we only actually work the days that we end up having snow days. Schools that work the days regardless must have their teacher contracts at that number of days.

When daycare has to close for weather, we pay the same and they are supposed to pay the teachers the same. Our daycare is open every weekday except holidays, no spring breaks or anything, so there is no opportunity to make up days.

They usually follow the public schools for closings, but lately our schools have been closing a lot for weather when I'm not sure they really need to. They've already been closed 4 days this year! Our daycare has been great at trying to help out working parents by staying open when they can. For instance, our public transportation hasn't been running the last 2 days, so our director has been driving around to pick the teachers up and bring them to school and also take them home, just so working parents can send the kids in and not take more time off. We really appreciate that extra effort.

Our daycare rarely closes for snow. They have closed early for inclement weather, but never closed for the day due to weather. However, even if they did, I have to pay for all of my days regardless. Kids are sick? Still have to pay full tuition. They have an in-service? Doesn't matter, I still have to pay full tuition. The only time we get any kind of break is if we go on vacation, and then we have to pay half tuition.

This is a very hot topic for my. Our daycare's policy is that there is no make up days for sick, snow days, or holidays. They follow the public school on closings for snow days. Although the public school has to make up those days our daycare does not. I feel it is unfair to close according to the public school unless you have makeup days like the public school. The public school in my town will close for several days after a snow storm because of buses. The storm will be long gone and the school will still close because part of our town is in the mountains and the roads are not cleared yet for accessibility for buses. Well guess what, our daycare does not bus. Parents drop off. I am all for closing for snow, but not for days after because public school buses can't access the mountain roads yet... I work in the medical field and basically my work does not close for anything. I have to take vacation days which are very frowned upon. I also had to take vacation days for MLK day and Presidents day. Guess what, the public schools are in session those days to make up, why can't our daycare????

@Amorini: Our daycare is full time, year round care. We pay monthly. The daycare only closes for weather if the local school district also closes for weather (which also means it may not be safe for teachers or students to get to school).

We don't get reimbursed for lost days, and I'm fine with that. The school has expenses to pay (teachers salaries, rent, etc) and the weather is not something they can control. (Since its full time, year round care there is no way to make up days).

@looch: Oh, I see. I'm pretty sure our schools have A/C?? I honestly don't remember growing up, though I remember having to go to school until June 26th one year!

I pay monthly, no make up dates or reduced rates for snow days. I think/assume teachers all get paid the same if they're salaried.

Also, DD1 goes to preschool/aftercare 5 days a week, and daycare is only closed on major holidays, so I don't know where the "make up" days would come from.

@Adira: We have the same thing...but if there are more than 5 snow days, which has happened in the past, then days that were vacation days, like in April break, are now school days.

We have 181 contracted days in the school year. The reason why we don't go past a certain day in June is because a lot of the schools don't have A/C and it's too hot to be in those buildings.

@DesertDreams88: Public schools here have 184 days of school - 4 are snow days - if we use them great! If we don't then the kids go to school 4 days longer.(meaning only 180 are required but they dont remove the snow days not used)

We haven't had more than 4 snow days since DS started elementary school 4 years ago

half days and early dismissals due to weather are not considered a snow day

@looch: @DesertDreams88: Okay, did a little research. Here's the info from last year:

"The last day of school for preschool is Monday, June 12, 2017 (instead of June 9).
The last day of school for grades K-12 is Wednesday, June 14 (instead of June 13). The district has had five snow days which are built into the calendar. Three delayed openings have resulted in a loss of cumulative instructional time that has resulted one additional school day."

@DesertDreams88: When I was in school, we always had two bad weather days usually right around Easter. If bad weather had closed us (tropical storms/hurricanes), they would be school days. If not, they would be off days. The year we got a really bad hurricane, they extended school for about a week. One district requested a shorter school year (a few weeks) due to closure for almost a month.

@looch: Well, I don't know for certain how our current district does it, since my kids are still in daycare, but that's how my school handled it growing up.

@DesertDreams88: I'm not sure we ever had the case where we didn't have at LEAST the number of closures the school anticipated, but if we did, I think school would've ended early. Like "Woohoo! We didn't have as many snow days as we thought, so school's last day is now May 29th!" kind of thing. I should ask my teacher friend how it's currently handled in our district.

We pay for days that the daycare is closed for bad weather, but we have two weeks of "vacation" vouchers and we can opt to use some of that time to not pay for the day. Same for holidays. I don't know if the teachers get paid the same.

How would you make-up a daycare day? Is your daycare only open during the school year? Our day care is open 5 days a week, year round (minus holidays) so there wouldn't be any days available for a make-up.

@DesertDreams88: If you don't use all the extra days then they are built in as days off for teachers and students. We do it the same way in Wisconsin.
