My parents just gave us their old snow blower, but I'm not sure of the brand. My dad has had to have to carburetor rebuild a few times (around $80 each time) and the last small engine mechanic he took it to told him about this enzyme additive that needs to be added to the gas. That's suppose to help with a lot of the issues that come up with snow blowers, something about the high amount of ethanol in gas that's not good for small engines. Here is a pic of the stuff we use.

We have a mid-level Craftsman from Sears. I think it is 24" width, gas powdered. We are in Wisconsin too. I have only used it five or so times this year which is below average. The only thing that isn't great is the mechanism to turn the chute doesn't really work. I just manually move it.

@spaniellove: We had pretty much the same experience with a Toro from Home Depot. It’s only 3 years old, but is sitting dead in our garage. We had it repaired twice in the first winter we owned it, then again the following winter (after regular maintenance and storage in a heated, dry garage) and then basically we just gave up. $800 down the drain. HD claims they have “no idea” why it’s broken, and without a truck to haul it back and forth to somewhere to get fixed, we just went back to hiring a plow guy. It will take roughly 3-5 years of hiring plow guys to break even with the cost of a snowblower, so I’m fine doing that.

On the other hand, my parents have a snowblower that’s like 10 years old and runs like a beast. I can ask them what they have if you want.

@regberadaisy: I guess the lesson we learned was to be very careful about documenting any service calls and understanding the return policy!

@spaniellove: well that's disheartening to hear their customer service sucks. Knowing my DH's luck with electronics he'll get a defective one like you!

We have a gas powered one (Toro, I think) and an battery powered one (for light snow, I feel comfortable to use this one alone).

@regberadaisy: DH bought a Toro because it supposedly had the best reviews and it worked once and then conked out. He tried to have Toro repair it, then tried to have Home Depot take it back but they refused to acknowledge that he contacted them within their 30 day window and he's been trying for a year to have it properly repaired or returned. Now he's stuck with an expensive snowblower that never worked. :bummed:

@regberadaisy: We live in Wisconsin, and use it pretty consistently as you can imagine and we've had ours for 2 years now (we bought out house just 2 years ago) but my dad also has a big Toro, and he's had his for 10+ years now. The big thing is though you need to keep up with the maintenance, and get it serviced to make sure everything is working properly.

a couple of my parents neighbors have asked me about my dad's snowblower, haha, so i'm guessing they're wishing for his over theirs. he has a poulan pro from sears, and now i can't remember the exact model, but it's one of the wider ones, and he LOVES it. he's never needed to have it repaired, just standard service for maintenance

@MrsBrewer: how long have you had yours? Any issues?

ILs have a Toro that has been used for 3 of our winter seasons and it needed to go into the shop. Given our harsh winters I'm not surprised.
