I'd prefer if people act as though nothing unusual is happening. All of my friends and family are used to it at this point, they just carry on with conversation or whatever. I don't use a cover.

@Baby Boy Mom: Good! That's exactly what I'm trying to do :) I think that's what I would want but obviously I haven't been in the situation yet.

I just prefer people go on as if nothing is different. I think it's a very natural thing so it can just pretty much be ignored. I did have a stranger once lift my blanket to see the "sleeping" baby then she saw my boob and backed off and said "oh sorry". That was pretty awkward.

@FOODNERD81: I don't think so- to me it just says: I'm giving you a few seconds of privacy so you don't have to worry about flashing the boob. If the eyes remain averted the whole time then yes that makes me uncomfortable, but otherwise I just appreciate having a moment to get comfortable.

The different reactions I get are funny. My mother's husband will not even LOOK at me when I'm breastfeeding. Of course I'm covered but it makes him so uncomfortable--his ex-wife breastfed their 3 kids.

When I'm home I don't use a cover (unless there are men over) some of my friends look away, one of my friends comes over and talks to me and watches, which I don't mind.

No one really breastfeeds in front of me so I dont really know. I think I would feel a little awkward though, which is really silly since I breastfeed too. Maybe thats why I'm not confident to do it in public

I usually offer them water then continue like nothing has changed. The less of a big deal that is made, the better IMO

@Baby Boy Mom: So averting your eyes doesn't make it seem like you are grossed out or something?

I think averting the eye while you get adjusted and then continuing on with the conversation.

I think it's different for everyone. I have a friend who when she breastfeeds, she points out how cute her baby is so she's kind of forcing you to look, even with DH in the room.

For the short time that I was breastfeeding I didn't care if people did look at LO, it's hard for people not to look at a baby, but I don't think I'd go so far as to point her out and bring their attention towards my boobs.

@mediagirl: No, it won't bother me to see, I just want to make sure they are comfortable. I overthink things...

I would just look away while they are getting adjusted and then look her in the eye once they're settled. Honestly, though, if they're breastfeeding in front of me and I see a slip, it's not going to bother me too much.

The other thread about breastfeeding in front of people brought up a question I've been wondering about. When you are BFing in front of someone, what do you want THEM to do?

When people have BF in front of me, normally I'll look away as they are getting adjusted, whether or not they are using a cover. Once they are settled, I sort of make a point to only look them in the face. I'm not at all uncomfortable with them BFing in front of me, with or without cover, but I want to give them privacy or whatever would make them more comfortable. But sometimes I think I'm just making it seem like I AM uncomfortable.

So, what would you prefer friends to do? Obviously, I'm not going to stare at their boobs, but do you prefer people to look away, or just keep talking like nothing is happening? Am I just totally overthinking this? I should note that when my sister was just starting to breastfeed, we were both looking closing to see if she was getting it in my nephew's mouth correctly, etc, so I'm totally fine with that, but I felt ok because she wanted me to look, if that makes sense.
