No. There's always something to do. These days I'm so eager for a break that I'd rather read a book or the news or just sit quietly while she's napping.

Nope. I thought other moms were crazy when DD was a newborn and I tried to follow the "nap while your baby naps" rule. First of all, my baby never napped for long periods of time. Secondly, she rarely napped anywhere where I felt comfortable leaving her unsupervised while I napped. And finally, when she finally did nap, I needed to get things done, like eat, wash bottles, take a shower, do laundry, etc. It was a tough time, but things get easier quickly. These days, my daughter will nap with me in bed on the weekends. I love mommy baby nap time!

Yeah no. My twins are usually asleep at the same time for like 15 min at a time. If they are, I usually run on the treadmill...it gives me more energy than a nap. But bedtime is a different story. Kids are in bed while the first number is still 7 and we are usually about an hour behind. I'm not a good napper and would rather crash early.

Yep, when she was new and sleep only happened in 3-4 hour stretches at the most, I would conk out at least once a day while she slept (sometimes with her, I miss those days:). I've always been an efficien napper though, I can lay in my car on my lunch at work and snooze for 30 minutes and wake up feeling refreshed. Even if you can't make yourself sleep, take some time to relax while your little one gives you a break. Read a book, watch TV, take a bath. It's important to remember yourself in the early days when it's all about the baby.

At the very beginning when you are insanely exhausted, yes, I could just pass out when baby napped, but now, I WISH! I have always been a horrible napper, and have lots all ability to nap while the baby man does.

Occasionally I nap when he does. It's easier in the morning when I'm still really tired. Most of the time when he naps, it's my time to eat, shower, brush teeth, go to the bathroom, etc.

Like @artbee said, with my first baby, she only slept in my arms until she was 5 months old...soooo...there was really no opportunity to!
With the second, I have so much on the go that I am either trying to create a decent activity for the older one, get a load of wash done, wash the floors, prep a meal, etc, etc. It is a never-ending cycle of work that leaves me with no down time!
I am, however, incredibly jealous of people that can and do nap!

When lo was a newborn she would only sleep in my arms so I didn't want to sleep for fear that id drop her. When she finally let me put her down I still didn't start napping because 1) I'm a very heavy sleeper so I'm scared I wont wake up when she cries and 2) its a good time to get things done because I cant get anything done when she's awake.

I napped at the same time or with Sawyer all the time when he was really small (for the first 3 months or so), I was so rested during that time! After the 3 month mark I started trying to be more productive, but I still nap with him at least every few days, just because I like our snuggle nap on the couch time.

In the beginning i was able to nap when LO napped because there was usually someone who was looking after her while i napped. Now there is just too much to do around the house that i don't nap.

I would nap with my twins. I would nurse them and then fall asleep with them on the nursing pillow. Sometimes I was so tired I wouldn't even wait for them to finish. I just hooked them on and fell asleep. The only bad part was if the let go while we were all asleep then I was just sitting on the couch exposed. Oh well!

Yes, I've always been able to knock out as soon as the baby goes down. I still "nap when the baby naps" and my baby is 22-months old! On weekends she is napping from 1-4pm... so my husband and I get to enjoy our LONG weekend naps again!

If it's before noon: hell yes! I would still be groggy and in PJs from the hectic night O' fun before ;) so I would need to sleep in order to function.
But his afternoon naps: no way. I had some chores/errands/shower/ phone calls to make....
My son is the type that doesn't let me get ANYTHING done when he is awake so, that's why I "save" so many things for when he is asleep.

In the beginning I was so darn exhausted that I could sleep when he slept, but usually just needed one nap a day to keep going. His first awake period during the day was very brief, maybe 45 mins...so I never got dressed and usually went back to sleep when he did.

sometimes it did/does... but not always.

In the first month my mind was always racing I couldn't settle down. Also he never slept more than 20-30 minutes unless he was held so I couldn't nap unless there was someone there to hold him for me. Now that he is a predictable sleeper I know I can get at least an hour, sometimes 2, if I go down the same time he does.

@Mrs. Tricycle: It doesnt always work because there are other things you have been waiting to do such as eat, brush your teeth, do dishes, clean up, wash bottles..

However as the baby gets older (6weeks +) it gets easier to do things while they are awake because they are less needy

Since I have no practical experience, "nap when the baby naps" sounds like a really good game plan. I'm getting the idea, though, that maybe that doesn't work? Why not?

Are you able to nap when the baby naps?
