We also didn't start a bedtime until 2-3 months of age, and even then it was very flexible.

You might want to talk to your pediatrician about sleep training at that age (assuming you mean CIO or modified CIO). I am all for sleep training, but Ferber and Weissbluth recommend waiting until four months to do it since that is when infants can self soothe. My pediatrician recommended this time frame as well (although I do know of a practice in NYC who recommends sleep training for the entire night at 8 weeks!).

Because newborns likely eat every 2-3 hours, you probably don't want to set a strict bedtime. For what it's worth, though, newborn bedtime is usually pretty late, like 9 or 10pm. As they start sleeping more regularly, bedtime moves up.
In the beginning, our "routine" was bath/wash, swaddle, nurse in dim light, white noise. When he got older, we put nursing/bottle before bath time and added a book after bath time.

I think the routine is more important than the timing. So maybe your goal is to have a 7:00 bedtime, but some days it might be 6:00 and some days it might be 8:00. Just decide which feeding that day will be the last before bedtime and then do your bedtime routine after it.

I did a the same bedtime routine for every nap and bedtime (basically every time she went to sleep, except after night wakings). It was a story, sleepsack/swaddle, song. Nothing fancy.

at that age I don't think you need anything more than a few cues - we just turned the lights off and nursed to sleep. For her day naps we didn't turn off any lights. And bedtime was a moving target for a long time - depended entirely on the day.

At that age, we didn't have a strict routine (mostly because we weren't giving her a bath every night when she was that young, and also her bedtime kind of changed depending on naps), but we had a few nighttime cues. She slept in our room at night, so usually I would dim the lights and put on white noise, swaddle, nurse her to sleep on our bed (or rock, if needed), and then put her in the rock and play next to our bed. Later, we started giving her a bath every night before that. I think the cues helped her figure out pretty early on the difference between night and day. She actually never slept in the rock and play during the day (I tried, but it just didn't work), she was a baby that preferred motion, so she would nap in the swing or stroller or on someone.

That being said, she was still a horrible sleeper and after an insane 4 month regression, we had to sleep train at 5 months. So even trying early on doesn't always help. Not saying that to scare you (since your LO might do just fine!) but just to set expectations. Good luck!

The routine I followed at that age was his feeding schedule which was every 3 hours. Wake up, change diaper, nurse, burp, rock to sleep if he didn't fall asleep nursing. As he got older he stayed up longer and I just adjusted to that. Didn't sleep train until 5.5/6 months to fall asleep on his own. Did the same with both kids.

I think that is pretty young to have a set bed time. At that age we put our LO to bed any time between 8-10 based on when she ate, when she had slept, and when she seemed tired. So maybe be flexible as to time but then do the same routine always? At that age I nursed to sleep then set her down and that worked for us for a long time. 8 weeks is really really young to expect a baby to fall asleep on their own (through training, if they just do it naturally that is another thing). I would either stick with nursing to sleep for now if it is working for you, or if you want more of a routine you could do bath, nurse, book/song, then rock to sleep.

DD is 5 weeks and I want to introduce bedtime routing by 6 weeks and then start some sleep training by 8 weeks (not STTN just for her to learn to fall asleep for naps and at night).

But at this she is really just following a loose EASY routine.. So where does bed time routine fit in??

For example, yesterday she ate at 4:30, then at 7. Sometimes she would fall asleep right after feeding. So do I do the bedtime routine only if she is awake after the 7pm feeding?

What about another day if she ate at 6 and then 9! I do bedtime routine after the 6pm, or keep here awake till after 7??

Also right now she nurses to sleep.. and I can't include that as the routine since Im not sleeping yet at 7!
