Sure. I went to him when my periods didn't return after discontinuing hormonal birth control. My mother experienced infertility, so I didn't want to wait around to see if my period came back. He prescribed me a course of progesterone to see if that would regulate my cycle - it did not. Then he ran a bunch of tests for thyroid function, PCOS, etc, and found nothing to worry about.

As I still was not cycling, he proscribed 50mg of clomid on days 5-8. I had a progesterone level done on CD 21 to see if I'd ovulated - which I did not on 50mg. So I moved to 100 mg, and ovulated consistently on that. He had me stop the blood work on my fourth cycle since I was ovulating consistently. I got pregnant on that cycle and now have a two year old.

We had planned to move on to an IUI if the fourth cycle wasn't a success, knowing that you only get 6 rounds of clomid at a time. Thankfully that wasn't needed. My husband was not asked to do a semen analysis. I'm about to start this process again, and we'll do the SA first thing, this time.

You can also get a sonogram to check for uterine fibroids. Women in their 30s are at higher risk and depending on their size and location they can sometimes inhibit implantation or carrying to term.

I had an HSG and I can't say it was the cause but I got knocked up two months later. I didn't have any permanent blockage but there was a slight pause in the flow of the dye. Many women have seen better conception results in the three months plowing and HSG.

My HSG was done during surgery, so I didn't feel anything, but I have had two hysterscopies, which is the same basic procedure. Not bad at all with a couple of Advil beforehand. Hurt less than a bikini wax.

Honestly, my HSG wasn't that bad at all. My RE had me take some antibiotics the night before and morning of and I took an extra strength Advil an hour before the procedure. The doctor who did it was great and talked me through it soothingly. I didn't feel the catheter at all and when the "dye" went in it felt like bad menstrual cramps, but no stabbing pain or anything. The whole procedure lasted 5 minutes max. 20 minutes later the cramps were gone and I felt fine. I had some spotting for about an hour after. My suggestion is take another Advil 4 hours after the procedure too, because I did have some pain when my first dose wore off.

My endometrial biopsy was MUCH worse, but it doesn't seem that many actually have that procedure done anyway.

My experience wasn't great, but I'm pretty sure it was also atypical. I would recommend taking some Motrin before you go, and bring a pad with you for the leaking and/or bleeding afterwards. But the good news is, it's quick! Good luck!

You should go see an RE who will do much more thorough testing. My GP did a few blood tests and they came back pretty much normal so he didn't see any problems and just threw 50mg Clomid at me. My RE did a full month of testing including ultrasounds, blood work to test for everything under the sun, a HSG, an interuterine biopsy and the AMH test. Only then did he structure a treatment plan for me.

@LittleLashesToes: If you live in Eugene, can I recommend Dr Burke Beller? He's an OB/GYN, but I think he might be a step up from who you have now. I lived there when I was TTC my daughter, and Dr Beller saw me through that process. He did blood work to rule out the more common issues, and then cycled me on four rounds of semi-monitored clomid.

Ah, reading down I see that you can see an RE. Dr Beller is still great!

I go in tomorrow for a blood test for FSH and will be going for my HSG next week. Speaking of the HSG, any experience with them?

I agree with the others, time to switch providers! The first thing (before Clomid) should always be to do cd3 bloodwork (includes FSH and lots of other important things), then a progesterone test at 7dpo. Ask your friends, check yelp, find an OB that has good reviews.

Otherwise, I've been happy working with a naturopath who specializes in fertility. There should be plenty in Eugene if thats a path you want to take.

@LittleLashesToes: I wouldn't go so far as to say that your OBGYN did the wrong thing by giving you Clomid without monitoring or previous bloodwork. What your OBGYN did up to this point is the same thing mine did, and I have every reason to believe that she was smart and wonderful, etc.

If your insurance covers infertility treatments, I would absolutely 100% make an appointment with an RE. If not, I would try to engage the OBGYN in a longer discussion. He/she owes you more information for sure.

If the Clomid didn't have any negative effects on you (cramps, thicker mucus), then maybe stay on it? That's a judgment call that only you can make, but you can definitely ask your doctor about the negative effects of the Clomid, which others have mentioned, and weigh your options.

I would also freely take whatever test is available. FSH, HSG, etc.

Good luck! Let us know what you decide to do.

@littlelashestoes: Based on my own experience, I think monitoring is important on Clomid. After one cycle, my uterine lining was really thinned out. There would have been no way of knowing that without monitoring. With that said, there are others who were NOT monitored and they had happy endings.

I would try to line up all the testing @Redsmarties: listed before moving on to other treatments. Our insurance doesn't cover infertility, but they've been champs at getting so much covered. $600 sounds high for the first visit, but might be an estimate if it includes an initial ultrasound and blood work.

Good luck, and hang in there!

Can you switch OBs? My OB is a fertility specialist so she had a plan. I would do all of the testing first. You need the CD 3 testing which tests the FSH and a few other things and I would also get an HSG out of the way.

If an RE is more expensive/not covered under your insurance and your OBGyn will do an HSG, that would absolutely be my next step.

An HSG can tell you a lot (I found out that BOTH of my tubes were completely blocked - so much for *those* 12 cycles of TTC...) or can just sweep out the system (statistics show that your fertility is increased for 3 months post-HSG). Either way, you have concrete information that can inform your next steps.

If you can't swing the RE just yet, get a hormone panel done- FSH, estrogen, LH, all that good stuff. I think it's strange that they would give you Clomid before doing any bloodwork/ can you switch OBs? I think that blindly giving medication is just a sign that your OB doesn't know what to do.
