My husband comes from a bigger family of all 1/2 siblings, I think there are 6ish. Most of them he doesn't talk to anymore except for two of them who are 15 & 25 yrs older than him. We both want to shoot for at least two kids that are close in age, about 2 years apart. I say 3 max he says 4+. He says he wants me to be a stay at home mom & I'm fine with that but papa better start bring in A LOT more money if he wants 4+ kids! My brother and I are only 4 years apart but my sister and I are 12 years apart. I've experienced being one of two and one of three. Right now, we're aiming for two kids. If we have another boy, we may consider having a third. DH is the 7th of 8. DH is only close with the two siblings closest in age to him. So I tell DH that 3 would be the perfect number, since I had 2 brothers, and he is close with his brother & sister. I think he'd rather have 2, though. Plus, the Chinese word for family has 5 strokes coming off the body so 3 kids and 2 parents. However, we have agreed on 2 and through, if they're opposite genders. if they're the same gender, we'd try for a third, but that's absolutely it! At this point I don't have a feeling/instinct for how many will be right for our family. I just really appreciate siblings and the way they can be friends who truly understand each other. While there were plenty of fights as kids and split/limited resources, as an adult I've realized how priceless each sibling is. Dh is one of 3, and wants 1-2 kids. I want 2-3, I think, realistically, so we've pretty much decided on 2. I absolutely want more than 1 though, because we both have such good relationships with our siblings that I definitely want (hope) our kids have that with each other. If money were truly no object (including maybe a part time nanny and a housekeeper!) I'd be inclined to want 4 but now, it would be too much. ETA: Also, age-wise more than 2 might be pushing it, since we are both 31 and just started TTC. Not impossible, but harder than it we were mid twenties when we started. I am the oldest of three and while in some ways I would love 3, I have a major fear of "middle child syndrome" - probably because my middle brother, while being a seriously great guy, is a very stereotypical middle in a lot of ways. DH is an only and definitely wants more than one, but goes back and forth as to whether 3 is too many (because "we would be outnumbered!" - haha). So we want 2 for sure, and I like to say "with an option for 3" - probably will ultimately depend on other factors such as age (I'm already 30 and we just started TTC our first), financial situation, and of course, if the first two are the same gender, I can see it being more tempting to try for a third and get the other gender.... I liked being an only I guess, but I found it lonely at times, and I find the prospect of my dad getting older and needing care to be very overwhelming on my own. Not that having a sibling would have guaranteed a friend or assistance with things like that, but I hate that I will never know. Interestingly, DH is also an only, but he loved being an only child and while he's OK with having more than one, it doesn't bother him only having one. Much the same as @highwire I didn't learn to share or be selfless until I was older, and I had trouble becoming self-sufficient (ie waking up with an alarm, having to clean etc) Despite the things I lacked, I have always dreamed of having one child. A girl. And guess what. I'm pregnant with a boy! So now that I'm having a boy, I've changed my opinion of two kids.
