I'm also using the Makeup Forever HD. I stopped using those strong topicals we aren't supposed to use too, and of course I am now seriously pizza faced. I have read that sulfer is good to help, and it works OK I think (certainly not as good as 10% Benzoyl Peroxide though, IMO). I bought this sulfur mask product on Amazon and I do a mask every time I think of it.
http://www.amazon.com/Pomada-De-Ointment-La-Cruz/dp/B00411B4CC/
(problem is, this stuff is sticky and doesn't dry, so it's kind of a pain to wear it around for long. But I do think it helps with the oil.)

Oh, forgot to mention- the Tarte Airbrush Finish Bamboo brush is awesome for buffing on foundation. I've used it for both liquids and powders and I think it really makes a big difference in me not looking cakey when I'm building layers of foundation.

I'm going to second MakeUp Forever's HD foundation. I've struggled with acne from puberty on and I like the coverage it gives me. Right now I'm using it with Physician's Formula mineral wear flawless complexion kit as the powders. It's only been a couple of days though, so i can't tell whether it's going to be my permanent routine or not.

I followed this routine for awhile, she's a model who has bad cystic acne:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ex33wtqnNz8

but it took way too long to get ready.

@yoursilverlining: Thanks!

The sad and frustrating part about cystic acne is that it starts way below the surface, from sebum and skin cells clogging pores and creating really painful, impossible-to-treat-without-hardcore-topicals cysts. I've been dealing with it since I was 13, and I have tried EVERYTHING. Different types of makeup; no makeup; almost every type of topical substance, solution, potion and combination; nothing but washing with water; facials; dietary changes including no dairy; washing my pillowcase every night; yada yada yada. The only thing that has ever, ever worked in eradicating it and keeping it at bay is really unsafe-for-baby prescription topicals like Differin.

So, based on 19 years of experience, I don't have a ton of hope that I'll be able to get the acne to totally go away right now (though the Arbonne has done a lot). But at least having a good way to combat the oil and keep my skin looking as healthy as possible, will help me cope with the rest, and make it easier to kind of cover up the alarming portions without looking like a cakey, oily maniac :)

@ladyfingers: This is the oil I use in place of a cream moisturizer: https://store.drhauschka.com/b2c/ecom/ecomEnduser/items/itemDetail.aspx?&page=&store=&itemNum=NDO&siteId=1&bulkexists=0

You only need to use an amount about the size of a pea, and apply all over the face. In winter I also tend to need to dab a teeny, tiny bit of moisturizer on my chin, which is my driest area.

I use Cetaphil face wash, Dr. Hauschka clarifying toner, and then the oil. Here’s info on the toner: https://store.drhauschka.com/b2c/ecom/ecomEnduser/items/itemDetail.aspx?&page=&store=&itemNum=CT&siteId=1&bulkexists=0

I would also really recommend getting facials to help, too. Once I started getting regular facials, my skin improved immensely. You should go to a place that can engineer a facial to suit your skin’s needs, and one that uses good, gentle products.
Good luck!!!

@Mrs.VW: I can say that it actually hasn't been itchy today. Last night I used a clay mask from The Body Shop for the first time, and I also started using their tea tree oil toner and moisturizer. So I'm not sure if those are helping with the itchiness or if it's just a coincidence. I'll try and notice if the itchiness stays away over the coming days as I continue to use these products.

@ladyfingers: No, oil does not clog your pores. Like dissolves like - meaning oil dissolves oil. If you want a good primer on using oil on your skin, google "Oil Cleansing Method." Unfortunately, a lot of the products that are sold for acne strip the face of oil, causing your skin to then over-produce oil which, of course, further contributes to acne :(

And yes I should add I have dry patches, too. Covered in oil. So I have awesome flaky cakey oil slicks! I forgot to say I use cliniques exfoliating scrub gently every morning to help control the oil and whisk away the scales before I put on makeup.

Thanks for the tips, everybody! I have been thinking about using the Arbonne only at night do I might check out some if the face wash suggestions. The MAC makeup definitely isn't exacerbating anything. It's covering way better than the bare minerals. It's just... Meh.

Oh, I so hear you. I am 13 weeks pregnant and experiencing the worst acne of my life - it's cystic, itchy and painful and I don't even want to leave the house *sigh*.

I actually switched from regular makeup (used Makeup Forever's HD Foundation) back to mineral makeup this past week in an effort to not exacerbate the acne. I can't really say if it's making it any better, but it is not making it worse, which is a good thing. I just layer the powder foundation with the powder concealer.

I'm going out after work to get a good clay mask. I'm launching an acne offensive (so far this involves the mineral make-up, raw honey to wash my face in the morning and OCM before bed).

I've tried a bunch of different foundations, including really pricey ones and Revlon's liquid foundation is really good for covering acne. You also might want to check what your base tones are, as lots of foundations are best for only cool or warm tones.

What really helped my oily skin was switching my skincarw routine and my moisturizer to an oil. It sounds weird, but the oil helps the skin figure out it doesn't need to produce as much oil itself. I also like Youngblood translucent mineral perfecting powder - works really well to keep everything matte all day long and is still light.

This isn't a makeup suggestion, but I feel like I've finally found a good face wash for my oily/acne prone skin. I've been using Lush's Herbalism facewash and then a gel called Grease Lightning (also from Lush) for the past few weeks. Prior to that, I was using a Clarisonic Mia and one of their face washes, and 10% benzoyl peroxide in the am and pm. With this Lush combo, I feel like I've finally found something that controls the oil throughout the day. I've been so happy with it that I've told at least five people to give it a try.

The face wash is super weird (it's green!), but I've had great luck with it thus far.

ETA: As far as makeup goes, I've been using Too Faced Amazing Face foundation, Primed and Poreless powder, and Amazing Face powder foundation for the past year or so. I really like their products and they seem to work well for my crazy face.

I have combo skin and have had acne/skin issues since puberty! Honestly with age it's gotten better, but the best product I've used is bare minerals. Everything else seems to make my skin unbreathable and break out even more!

I've been using bare minerals for the last two or three years now and it's the most coverage without harshness on my face and it's even improved my skin as well!

I have awful cystic acne that I currently can't treat because the only thing that has ever worked are strong topicals I'm not allowed to use while pregnant. I've been having moderate success with Arbonne's Clear Advantage line, mainly in maintaining the acne where it doesn't necessarily get worse, but doesn't really ever go away. It is the best it's been, but I have this perma flare-up on my chin that's very disheartening.

For a couple of years, I've used Bare Minerals, which has been fine on my topically-treated clear skin. But with acne, and now bad oil exacerbated by pregnancy, it's no longer cutting it.

I visited the MAC store and they tried a few things and we finally settled on the Face + Body Foundation as a base and the Pro Longwear concealer on problem areas. And it's... OK, I guess. It covers me better than the Bare Minerals, for sure. But I don't know if the color is too orange, or what, but my red marks still show through too much for my comfort. And then my skin gets oily and stuff cakes (though not as bad as with BM).

My current routine is:
Smashbox primer
MAC Face + Body Foundation
Mac Pro Longwear concealer on problem areas
Bare Minerals mineral veil

Can anybody recommend something that's worked for them? While this routine is better, I feel like it's not really *there* yet.
