@sandsandmore: your strength is amazing.

The main issue I have with insurance is that in the US it is overwhelmingly tied to ones's employment. Things can be going along fine one month, and then the next, you might be out of a job and out of insurance. Where I live, insurance coverage is mandatory for all people living in the country, so whether or not you are working, you must be insured. As a result, the insurance companies have all kinds of levels of policies. It's not cheap, but it takes away a lot of the worry. At the end of the day, nothing is free and we all pay for those that with higher premiums.

This is one of those times where I am really glad to live in the UK. Having our baby won't cost us a dime. No insurance needed. I always think it's strange that so many English people take it for granted. When I first told her I was pregnant, my husband's Aunt asked if I was going to have the baby in the UK or the US. I was like, "Well we live in the UK... so here... and we couldn't afford to have a baby in the US because we don't have any insurance. It would cost us thousands and thousands of dollars!" She looked confused and said, "Oh.... right."

@sandsandmore - I can't even imagine how difficult the entire journey has been for you guys. I'm hopeful that your insurance will cover most if not all the costs. Do you know what your out of pocket maximum is?

@jbhops. We have a maximum out of pocket expense, which is capped at around 4K, I believe. But from what I understand, Medicaid is supposed to cover anything that insurance doesn't, including OOP fees. So we'll find out sometime (probably in a year or two).

Sebastien is doing incredibly well. Thank you.

Wow @sandsandmore. I'm so sorry to hear about your son Sam. I hope Sebastien is doing well.

I'm glad you have insurance after all that. Do you happen to know what your deductable is and what you pay on top of that (like 10%, 20%, etc)? That should help you figure out what you'll end up owing for the actual medical costs since you know how much the bills were.

@sandsandmore - I'm so sorry to hear you lost your son Sam. :-( I'm a twin, and hearing that someone lost a twin shakes me to the core.

I'm sure as a parent it was so so hard... sending much love from Brooklyn, NY.

Oh my gosh! Good luck sorting everything out with your insurance company. I know it can be confusing and frustrating at times.

This is one of the main reasons we are waiting to have kids. We need reliable insurance we can depend on if things go wrong.

We let our son Sam go. They offered to continue 'extraordinary measures,' but chose not to. So not everyone who ends up with a huge bill is there because the family won't let go. Babies born early need life support, some more than others. That life support can range from simple bili lights to ventilation to surgery. I have no problem paying what we owe -- we just don't know what that amount is.

i think hospitals lose a lot of money. i never thought about babies but i know when people don't want to let go of their loved ones (who are vegetables and should be let go), it's really expensive to keep those people on life support but people don't care because they don't pay and keep those people on for months at a time.

I was just reading through the details of my insurance policy and thankfully everything is covered 100% as well. It's great to see that you've benefited from insurance. Gooooood vibes for your twin baby boys and their ongoing health!

Those bills are crazy! I remember my parents telling me that when my sister was born 30 years ago (she was 2 months early) the bill was almost 300k for a month in the NICU and all the extra hospital bills from compications later on. They didn't have insurance at the time and just barely got done paying those bills off a couple years ago. :/

On one of the preemie forums I'm a member of, someone posted about the difference between a fullterm baby and a preterm baby in regards to the final hospital bill. That got me curious since I had 27 week twins. Wow, am I grateful for good insurance.

Samuel: $1,758,334.44
Sebastien: $855,315.71

We haven't actually paid a dime yet since everything is still being worked out with insurance. The NICU is out of network (but it's the only NICU so it's not like we have a choice) -- so lots of appeals and such. Because of the boys' low birth weights they qualified for Medicaid, but that insurance doesn't kick in until everything is finalized with our primary insurance.
