with charlie, we put him in a sleep sack and then swaddled him over that with his arms out for a week or so. but when we sleep trained at 4 1/2 months, we went cold turkey since he started rolling over.

with olive we went cold turkey at 4 months and she actually slept better without the swaddle -- it was the first time she slept 11 hours straight!

I just put C down cold turkey with an A+A blanket to cuddle with and she's asleep! We'll see how long it lasts.

@caffeinated: Woo-hoo! Good news!

Um, I plan on never stopping the blanket since it works so well for us. :) My SIL crocheted blankets for both kids when they were born, and DD still sleeps with hers every night, at 27 months. DS is 6 months now, so we'll just keep doing it. I might stop tucking it in, though, if he starts to show signs that he doesn't like it anymore.

@Honeybee: It worked! Well, meaning she didn't scream at the top of her lungs while she rolled around everywhere. She is now fast asleep. Of course, i realize this is probably a temporary solution...when did you stop using the blanket?

@LAGS: LOL, i'm surprised my LO isn't blind by now because she does the same thing when awake.

@Honeybee: now i remember you posting something about that elsewhere. i'm going to have to try the blanket strategy. maybe that'll keep her in place.

Bumping because I'm in the middle of this too. Except my LO wont self soothe with her hand/fingers... she prefers gouging her eyes out with them.

We ended up completely getting rid of the swaddle, but replacing it with a crocheted blanket tucked in to the sides of the crib. It took him about 3 days to fully adjust, and the first day was the hardest!

ETA: I do think, for some babies, a replacement items helps keep their hands occupied and their arms down. For DS, he twines his fingers through the blanket; for DD, she used a lovey. I just removed DD's lovey from her crib after she was asleep, since I was worried about suffocation (I'm not so worried with Ds's blanket since it already has big holes).

Watching this thread. We're in the process of swaddle-weaning too. We've been doing one arm out for naps.

LO is currently in her crib, rolling over everywhere and screaming/crying at the top of her lungs. I really don't know if it's the rolling or the lack of swaddle that's causing her inability to sleep.

We didn't go cold turkey. For about 2 months, we had been leaving one arm out (ever since she found her fingers to self-soothe). This morning was the first time we put her in a sleep sack.

I know many had immediate success swaddle-weaning cold turkey, but i want to hear from any moms whose LOs took a while to adjust to sleeping without a swaddle. What should i expect and how long will it take? Is this the end of her two hour naps?
