I would probably try to talk to them to understand WHY they wanted to change their name. Are they having an identity issue that's something a whole lot bigger than just a name? Do they get teased for the name for some reason? Do they just feel it doesn't suit them and the person they've become? As long as there wasn't a larger more concerning problem going on, then I would be supportive of the change. We were 7 years old though, and it was an imaginative play sort of thing. But if my kids seriously thought of legally changing their names as adults, I'd be sad... We named our daughter a pretty normal name that isn't super popular.
