I have always sent Easter baskets to my brother's kids (I don't do their birthdays.). The reason I started was totally self-serving - they live across the country and we only see them 1 time each year in the summer, so I started sending the baskets as kind of a "reminder" of who I was and trying to get the kids to like me. I've kept it up over the years because I think it's kind of a fun tradition.

It's the easiest way to show you care when you're not there plus it's expected. We only gift to our God children- no nieces or nephews. We only see them/ get invited during gift-giving events.

Like @T.H.O.U and @Mrs. Tiger mentioned, I try to come up with other ways to make my nieces and nephews feel special. So a card, a phone call, a video message.

My sister and I agreed no more sending presents to the others kids. We send videos instead and they all love it! They are on the opposite coast from us.

@bluestriped bee: i think for kids cards in the mail is so rare it's a great treat. It doesn't have to be a gift! My mom is good about sending kids in the mail or postcards when they're away. The kids love it more than gifts.

Maybe gifts like sidewalk chalk, playdoh, crayons, bubbles? Things that get used up?
Or maybe something useful but fun like a beach towel or lunch box?

I totally get wanting to send gifts :)
And even though my son doesn't need anything we are very thankful for the sweet gifts our relatives/friends give DS.

I guess talking to my sister about Easter gifts and how it might be turning into Christmas. It got me thinking, why do we send gifts?

I told her I send gifts because it sort of makes up for me not being there in person (since I'm across the country and miss out on birthdays and other events).

I don't mean to turn Easter into another gift buying holiday. I could send money but I guess it's a bit impersonal.
