Yes, I played piano growing up and now I'm learning guitar. DH plays bass. I really want our kids to know how to do stuff, and being able to play an instrument is high on the list.

We will absolutely have our children take piano lessons from a young age. It made learning all other instruments SO easy for me because you only have to play one or two notes at a time, as opposed to five or six or seven with the piano!! So if they have that background in piano (and all the basics of music theory too), they can then go on to learn whatever instruments they choose in the future.

Both of our children have shown huge interest in music since they were tiny babies so we know this will be a big part of our lives.

It will be a requirement. For us there are a few lessons/skills that they'll have to take, but once they've mastered them, if they choose not to continue, that'll be okay with us. They need to learn an instrument, to swim & ride a bike. Basic skills everyone should have.

Absolutely. I started playing piano by ear at 2, then followed in grade school by the flute, then sax, then piccolo. In high school I picked up the guitar. In college, the drums. DH plays guitar and bass.

It's super important to us, and hope that DS will enjoy it as well.

I played violin all through school, so if LO wanted to play an instrument, I'd love for her too. But I don't plan on forcing anything. If she loves it as much as I did, great, if not, that's okay too. Although I do think it is a good skill to be able to read music and have a critical ear for music, so we'll probably try and take her to musical performances (orchestra, opera, ballet, etc.) whether or not she plays.

DH and I are both musical people and we are sharing this love with our children. DH plays Violin and Cello. I play Flute, Picc, and Mallet percussion. I would like to start DS off with Piano or drum lessons. :)

Yes! I didn't really get the opportunity to learn to play a musical instrument (dad was against having "noise" in the house). But based on the studies of how learning music at a young age (even if they don't stick with it) helps so much in math and other cognitive skills, I will definitely want my child to take lessons for a few years. DH is VERY good at piano and I'd love for our LOs to take after him in that!

Yes! As much as I hated violin, I know now that it was a good thing. It's not important to DH though because he was never musical or took any lessons.

It isn't so important to me, but I know it will be important to my husband. He played violin from the time he was 4 or 5, and he feels very strongly about the importance of music education.

I played flute in high school and I really enjoyed it, so I don't have anything against starting music lessons early, so long as the kid is enjoying it. I'm not going to force my kid to continue something if he/she hates it...

Yes, I want them to start with piano (probably around kindergarten/grade one) and then let them choose something else if they want after a couple years.

My parents let me quit after one year, and I've held it against them all my life, so they don't get to quit that young. Sorry girls.

Yes, I still play cello in community groups and play piano when he's home. He's on the wait list to start Suzuki violin lessons at 3 (the only group that will take him that early). He can change but he will be doing at least one arts and one physical activity at all times.

He does show major interest in music already. So I don't think he will hate it. He "plays" the piano and plucks my cello.

Absolutely. My parents FORCED me into 13 years of piano, which I hated but I happily played the flute and drums in school. I will insist on learning music but my LO will decide what instrument.

@Mrs. Tricycle: Yes! I totally think it's important. DH played the sax and I played the flute. J can pick what instrument he wants to play (although we'll probably start pretty early with the piano) but I do think it's important to learn, as you said, so he can appreciate music and hard work. My Dad is very musical and actually plays in a couple of "old hippie dude" bands (guitar) and wants J to learn guitar like NO other. He's 5 months old and my Dad plays his guitar for him all the time ;)

Definitely! I always took piano lessons, and once I was in middle/high school I played cello in the orchestra. It taught me a lot about discipline, and I appreciate music so much more now! I still dig out my cello every once and a while, I wish I had been better about keeping up!

Yes, we are both planning on introducing an instrument, just not sure which or at what age! My DH has played guitar for over 10 years, and while I was in choir and color guard, I was always jealous of the band kids for knowing how to play an instrument! I think it really adds something special to a kid's life!

I played the trumpet all through school, so it's important to me that our baby learn an instrument - I want them to know the value of practice and appreciate music - and some of my best friends were my fellow band members (oh boy, that sounds dorky).

DH's dad is a professional jazz musician and a retired music teacher/band director. Although DH didn't like taking lessons from his dad (he's still way into music), I'm hoping our LO will love music lessons with Grandpa.

Is it important that your kids learn an instrument?
