@Adira: Yes! Agreed!

I'm sorry she said that to you. I've heard it a couple of times from friends, who've never been pregnant before, that I'm big. One time my sister said, "Gosh, you're getting big" to me "jokingly". I told her to never tell a pregnant woman she's big. She tried to laugh it off and act like she was joking with me. I try to not let it bother me.

I think when people say rude and insensitive things like this, we should call them out on it. Most people just don't realize how hurtful they are being, and if we don't point it out to them, they'll just do it to the next pregnant lady they see.

When I announced to my parents and grandparents, my grandmother's first response was "I was wondering because you seem bigger!" I said "Are you calling me fat, grandma? Because that's just rude!" I know she didn't MEAN to be insulting, but she was, so I pointed it out! She wouldn't have said anything about my size if she didn't know I was pregnant, so why is it okay to comment on my size now that she does know?

If someone ever tells me I'm looking big, I think I'll be tempted to respond with "So do you - what's your excuse?" regardless of whether it's true or not. It's just rude to comment on someone's size, period, pregnant or not.

I'm Korean and have heard comments about my weight my entire life!
I got a lot of "are you having twins" when I was pregnant with Lo. I just told people, no, I just ate a lot and am really fat. Hah

Most of the large and in charge and fat comments come out Of my mouth. :P

ugh, never okay to call anyone fat, pregnant or not! people are so rude.

I've gotten a few comments along the lines of, "whoa you popped!" "you finally got big!" "holy belly!" but what's offended me the most is when people (including family members and a friend) told me I'm "starving the baby."

I've measured small all along, but I've been throwing up DAILY since 6 weeks, and I'm 38 weeks now! I mean c'mon, I'd LOVE to be able to eat something other than basic carbs - I'm not purposefully friggin' starving my child. I bawled when I got home after my friend said that. I already had mom-guilt enough that my baby is measuring 3 weeks small, so why tell me I'm starving her? Stupid, stupid people. :(

i can't get over what people think it's okay to say to pregnant woman! i'm sorry you guys!

@jessiejo17: a couple years ago when my niece was much younger she asked me when my baby was coming out.... i wasn't pregnant. :( haha

i think i might've taken it differently if she simply said, "you're not very big yet!" or "you're not as big as i thought you'd be!" but instead she essentially said "you just look fat, not pregnant." i think my sensitivity is in part because of the hormones, but whatever... don't call a pregnant lady fat even if you mean well! ha

I'm sorry, an adult should know better!

My 5 year old niece asked if I was going to sit in the hot tub with her this weekend at my mom and dads and I said "no not today after I have the baby then I'll sit with you" and she's like "is it because you are embarrassed of your fat belly?" I laughed it off but my mom jumped at her and said "it's not a fat belly it's a baby belly." I have tried my best to shake off comments since people don't seem to know how they come across!

i did hear that same comment and still do now.... while it's their way of "complimenting" me that i'm "small" i think it's rude either way... as a first time mom, it doesn't feel good to hear "are you sure there's even a baby in there?"... CMON! I've gained 27 lbs!!! just because i'm not carrying it the way ppl expect me to... UGH.

Ugh, that is rude. I think some people think it's a complement...like, "you're not near as big as I thought you'd be!" but in a weird way. But i think it's a pretty common one. Nearly all my friends have told me, "oh people just told me they thought I was gaining a little weight until i announced my pregnancy". I'm about 11 weeks now and I definitely think I just look kind of fat. Unfortunately, those first few months are so ambiguous sometimes!

I haven't told my mom yet, but when i was about 6 weeks along or so, she told me i was "meaty". One, not cool, but two, meaty?! Kind of funny :P I think it's 100% ok to say something if people make comments. I have a lot of....tactless coworkers and I often just say, "rude" to them when they say rude shit.

My aunt also made a comment as well. She asked my husband what he thought of me getting fat. My jaw dropped, and i said - well I'm not fat, I'm pregnant. I've stopped trying to be nice to people. When people tell me how big I'm getting, I say - well i'm not supposed to be getting smaller, or that's what happens when you grow another human being. What we and our bodies are doing is amazing and I refuse to let anyone make me feel badly for it!

I don't think it's ever ok, even at the very end. DH's uncle said "hi fatty" when he saw me at the family July 4th cookout. I was scheduled for a c-section the next day and so swelled up, it was gross. It took everything I had NOT to burst into tears. I felt so huge and gross anyway. I didn't need that comment.

In the earlier months I just felt fat, not pregnant. Wearing babydoll/empire waist tops helped me feel better.

The only other thing I can tell you, is that once you have your baby, it will all be worth it. :) Keep your chin up!

I worked as a high school teacher during both of my pregnancies. During my first pregnancy the students would CONSTANTLY say "Miss, you are big!" And I don't mean once a week, a day, I mean once a period I would hear this. And it really started to bother mean, because guess what.... A woman who is 9 months pregnant IS going to be big (that and I ended up giving birth to a 9lb 6oz baby girl.... so I was slightly larger than the average pregnant lady, but still!?) Good luck. It is AMAZING what people think is ok to say to someone who is pregnant.

i had my first rude pregnancy comment tonight, and i can't get it off my mind. i don't know if it's the hormones or it's because it's something i've been self-conscious about, but i can't seem to shake it. it's so weird because i never spend time worrying about people's opinions of me... i almost always feel good about myself.

tonight we went to dinner with my aunt, and her first comment to me was, "wow! you don't even look pregnant... you just look like you ate way too much already!" uh.... so, i'm fat? thanks. i've been dying for that perfect round obviously pregnant belly, and i've been worried that maybe i just look even fatter than normal. my family has reassured me that i do, in fact, look pregnant, but my aunt's comment really threw me off. whether i look pregnant or not... why is it suddenly okay to tell me i look fat? not what this hormonal preggy needs to hear!

i know i'm not alone. people don't seem to filter themselves anymore. what kind of comments have you gotten and how do you deal with them?
