We used PODS. It wasn't outrageous, but it wasn't that cheap either. We had a lot of stuff that we needed to store in order to stage/sell our first house. Rather than moving it all to a storage facility and then moving in back to our new house, we stored it with PODS and then they brought it to our new house when we were ready to unpack it. They charged us a monthly fee to store it. We used a moving company for everything else.

@Honeybee: I was relocating from DC to upstate NY (about five hours away) and was planning on storing the pod for two weeks. It ended up being cheaper for me to hire movers to pack up a truck, drive it myself, and then hire other movers in NY to unload the truck. This includes all materials, gas, and airfare from NY back to DC.

For my clients it works out because the pod just sits in their driveway until the job is done. It would be more costly for them to hire movers and a truck twice in order to put stuff in storage.

I just looked into this because we are about to close on our house. There is an estimater thing online on the PODS website. The initial cost doesnt look too bad, then you click "what are some additional charges" and there is a fuel fee, delivery fee, another pickup fee, subsidy fees, etc. That being said, for a move within town or to a nearby town, its cheaper than hiring movers where we are. We paid movers about 1K to move us within Manhattan. The estimate for PODS was cheaper to move to the suburbs where we are going, but not by much. Id rather pay movers

@oliviaoblivia: Was your move in-town or were you relocating? Do you think it's cheaper than using movers if you're relocating to a new area hours away?

I looked into it once and it was almost triple in cost to just hiring movers. I have clients use them for temporary moves during renovations all the time though.

Speaking of moving, has anyone used PODS to move? It seems like a good solution, since you can pack it up at your conveience, but is it expensive?
