Agree with pp's...time. But LO also had a tongue tie that went undetected for 5 weeks (& was missed by 4 medical professionals) so having that released helped a ton. I knew the pain I was having was not normal and pushed to figure out why. Definitely have baby's mouth checked for ties!

Another tip or trick that seeing a LC in person taught me was to sandwich your breast/nipple and then kinda swipe up on baby's lips up toward the nose. Do that a few times to almost tease them to get them to really open wide and then literally shove it in as far as you can.

I'm with everyone else - time and good positioning. In the begining I went bra free so they could dry out or used the soothies gel pads, which helped.

@babycanuck: yes, boob smoosh, and open up baby's lips around your nipple. I had to do that the first week or so until he got the hang of it.

Lansinoh Soothies gel pads were the only reason I was able to function. I had a painful latch for eight weeks and in hindsight I do not know why I didn't quit! But we made it to 10 months then introduced cow's milk. And we were still nursing once per day when I cut him off at 16mo.

Def time. And also Motrin. It really helped my pain. Both from latch and just general soreness in my boobs that I had. I took it around the clock for the first 6-8 weeks.

Check for tongue tie, mama. It can easily go undetected, especially if it's posterior, and wreak havoc on your nipples. Use coconut oil or olive oil on them, and cover with tiny squares of plastic wrap to keep the oil on your nipples instead of absorbing into your clothes. Don't use lanolin-- it's linked to increased cases of thrush. Hang in there

I would see an LC and have baby's mouth evaluated for restrictions.

APNO kind of helped for me, but due to a tongue tie, my nipples were destroyed. I cycled through: APNO, coconut oil, a Chinese herb ointment, calendula, and a yeast/thrush cream. It was brutal. The only thing that truly helped, was getting LO's tongue tie lasered at 12 weeks.

It WILL get better! For about 5 weeks with K, there was toe-curling pain for the first 30 seconds or so....and it just went away one day.

But while it's happening, I loved APNO- my midwife wrote a prescription and it was a serious lifesaver. Also, putting breast milk on my nipples and letting them air dry after feeds really helped.

Time. It gets better after a few weeks. Your nipples kind of go numb after a while. Before that it felt like a shark bite and I'd cringe, clench my fist and try not to scream when she latched.

Does it hurt the entire time he nurses or just the first few minutes? It was painful on my left side for a couple weeks even though DD had a good latch. I think it got better because her mouth got bigger. I just waited it out.
