We did decide to ST without the swaddle and even though he still jolts awake sometimes, he can go back to sleep. Naps are a different story!

I don't have advice on the other questions, but wanted to let you know that DS was swaddle weaned at 12 weeks, and has STTN since (minus a few days last week during regression).

1. Is 16 weeks too early to stop swaddling? Will it hinder his ability to sleep if we don't swaddle?

I don't think so! Then again, my LO kind of broke herself of swaddling around 8 weeks. Or rather, I just stopped trying to swaddle her because no matter what, she would find a way out.

2. Did you set a limit of how long you'd let your baby cry before you stopped and picked him up or did you just let him keep crying?

Like you, we had a fairly established sleep routine, which I think helped tremendously. My LO very rarely cried very much, but if she did, one of us would go in around 20 minutes or so.

3. Any words of wisdom as we get ready to start?

Consider doing a "dream feed". We started sleep training at about 3 months and we did the dream feed for a month or so - until we knew she could sleep through the night without it.

4. Tomorrow (Sunday) I'm going to start putting him down drowsy but awake and let him fuss and cry some before I go back to either pick him up or pat him to sleep. We start sleep training on Friday. Any tips on how long I should let him cry?

I think you just have to go with your gut, as unfortunately opinions run the gamut!

Good luck!

@scg00387- thanks for asking! Keep in mind he sill has 2 feedings a night. The first night was HORRIBLE. He cried for two hours, conked out for 4 hours and then from midnight - 6:30 am, he would cry for an hour and then sleep for 30 min. On the second night, he cried for 20 min. Then moved around for 20 min. Then went to sleep for 5 hours. Slept for another 2 hours and then cried for 30 min and slept for 15 min. From 4-6:30 am. The third day he fell asleep in 7 min. No crying and slept three bigs chunks in between feedings. If we get him down at the right window, he moves around a bit and falls asleep without crying in about 10 min or less. These past two days he woke up at 1ish whining. I started giving him some frozen breastmilk during the day so he might have had less calories than he's used to which is why he woke up? Not sure. I'm going to go back to all formula today and see how he does. Anyway, great success! I am able to get so much more done after he goes to bed!

@matador84 - thank you! I'm just worried he's going to be the kind of baby that cries for hours. I don't know if I can take it. Did you do 10 min and soothe and didn't increase the intervals? How long did it take before the baby started sleeping on his own?

I just copied and pasted your questions --see below

1. Is 16 weeks too early to stop swaddling? I think 16 weeks is right around the time to stop swaddling. We were dependent swaddlers but right around 3.5 months DS was starting to roll slightly and break out of the swaddle more frequently. But, if the swaddle is working for you and LO isn't rolling, then keep with it.

2. Did you set a limit of how long you'd let your baby cry before you stopped and picked him up or did you just let him keep crying? What if he cries for 2-3 hours on the first night?
I just have a feeling it's going to take him a long time and I'm worried he can't do it.

You can do it! As long as your baby is fed, and clean you are not abandoning them! A lot of our daytime routine was also important to our nighttime routine at 16 weeks. I made sure he was awake by 7 each day, and had no daytime naps more than 2 hours to make sure it didn't interfere with nighttime sleep. At 16 weeks there was a 5pm supper feed followed by a catnap. The last feed was an 730 or 8 pm feed where I would really tank him up and nurse for around 30 minutes.

As far as CIO, if we put him down and he cried, he was clean and fed, I would just let him cry. I would go and soothe him every ten minutes but not pick him up. This was killer at first because I felt like I was up for soooo long, but I kept having to tell myself he is fed, he is clean, he isn't abandoned. Then, if I was still feeding in the middle of hte night I started backing the feedings up in 15 minute intervals each night. So if he woke up at 3am, I wouldn't feed until 3:15 x 3 nights. Then move the feed time to 330 for 3 nights, and then by the time you move it up one more time they sleep right through it until the morning feed at 7.

3. Any words of wisdom as we get ready to start? This is just what worked for me. It's different with every baby and every parent. Don't get frustrated because it's easy to do so.

4. Tomorrow (Sunday) I'm going to start putting him down drowsy but awake and let him fuss and cry some before I go back to either pick him up or pat him to sleep. We start sleep training on Friday. Any tips on how long I should let him cry?
10 minutes, soothe, 10 minutes, soothe, 10 minutes, soothe. I've found after 3 cycles DS has almost always been asleep by then.

My LO is 15 weeks (14 weeks adjusted). After easing the Bedtiming book suggested by @mrsbee, we want to try to sleep train at the end of this week when Lo is 16 weeks. He's pretty much only been rocked to sleep and rocked to sleep at night wakings. We have a bedtime routine, white noise and we plan to swaddle because he seems to flail around a lot. He can bust out if the swaddle sometimes though.

He got sick two weeks ago so we have him sleeping with us on his tummy to help with the congestion but he's better now and we are ready for him to sleep on his back in the crib. He was having several night wakings and had a hard time settling down at night. It would take 4 or 5 times of rocking him back to sleep before staying asleep. But on his tummy he's gone 6:30-11:20 and 12-4 and 4:30-6:30 am with feedings at the two wakings. So he can do it on his tummy but not on his back.

We are thinking of doing controlled crying with checks (Ferber). I'm so nervous! I have some questions for experienced moms and dads who sleep trained.

1. Is 16 weeks too early to stop swaddling? Will it hinder his ability to sleep if we don't swaddle?

Thank you! I love reading the boards here!
