@lizzywiz: I know. I currently have my head buried in the sand about all of Theo's follow up. Chronic health issues suck!

@lizzywiz: not stupid! New diagnoses piss me off, no matter how "minor"! I hope summer is a break.

@Mrs. Jacks: I think so, too. And, maybe I'm wrong, but my perception of people who have a lot of respiratory issues is that they are always on the thinner side- don't know why, just a stereotype in my mind. I guess the concern is that she went from 40ish percentile at 2 to 3ish percentile at 3. But, summer should give us a break from the illnesses (it has the past two summers) and I honestly do feel her illnesses are getting less severe, so it will probably improve from here.

For some reason it really hurt me when they listed it under her already robust list of current conditions. Stupid, but mama emotions aren't always logical.

Sigh... I'm sorry. If it makes you feel better, my five year old is 38 inches and 30 lbs. Just cracked 30...

Losing is never great, but small can be normal.

Thanks, ladies!

@hellobeeboston: Lo's issue is that she gets really sick when she is sick. Otherwise, between illnesses, she is totally normal.

@Truth Bombs: @catlady: Lo's body has over the top reactions to any kind of illness, so I think stress (physical) might be a factor.

@blackbird: @Truth Bombs: I would think both of those remedies burn pretty bad? If they work I would still do it, just follow stinging swab w/ honey swab, I think.

This isn't any immediate help, but I used to get canker sores all the time (as a child through my late 20s) and I stopped getting them when I finally started making sure I was getting enough sleep (I have a natural tendency to stay up too late so I have to force myself to get ready for bed early). When I had LO and was totally sleep deprived again, I started getting canker sores all the time again. Not sure that helps in your LO's case, but consistent sleep is the only thing that keeps them at bay for me (actually for DH too). Good luck to you and your poor LO.

@lizzywiz: Tea Tree oil on a qtip always makes my canker sores go away. My brother and I both get them pretty regularly and they are always brought on by stress.

@lizzywiz: try a liquid antacid (cant remember the name of it right now) but when DD had HFM we used a q-tip soaked in liquid antacid and put that on her sores in her mouth for pain relief

That's awful :bummed: There is a lidocaine ointment for canker sores, but I'm not sure if it's ok for kids... maybe ask your doctor or dentist if she can use that. It doesn't make the sore go away faster, but it makes it hurt much less so it's possible to eat.

@lizzywiz: your poor LO. Sorry you're dealingbwith this. And I'm not familiar with your history, but have they tested for things that could be causing her "failure to thrive" (medical term I have heard). I ask because I have celiac disease and Ive been carefully watching my son for signs, and not gaining weight is a big one. And personally, before I was diagnosed i had canker sores and was sick more often. Haven't had a canker sore since going gluten free 8 years ago.

Totally specific example, but maybe something to look into? And drinking milk was the only thing that helped with the sores for me :(

@Mrs. Tiger: well, it's kinda a mystery, because all of LO's stuff only occurs when she is sick, but the canker sores, of course, take longer to heal. She has had two bouts in the last two months, both becoming evident as an illness ran its course. So, right now, with her history, I am thinking it is illness related, but not completely sure. Doc says we may never know why...kinda how they treat her croup reactions and hives, lol.

@PinkElephant: wow, thanks for a new idea that might work!- I'll check on it for safety but we may have a winner :-)

I'm not 100% sure this is ok for a 3 year old, but I used to get a lot of canker sores in elementary school up through my teen years and tucking part of a Tums in my mouth against the place where the canker was and letting it dissolve helped the discomfort. It's a similar effect to baking soda paste but tastes better and probably requires less wrangling when dealing with a three year old. :)

Ugh. That sucks. So sorry mama.

K gets canker sores sometimes (I do too, I think they're genetic?) But for us, we get them after biting lips or something. Does she injure her mouth and then get them, or are they somehow a part of her respiratory issues?

She is 3, now, 37 inches and 27 pounds and it puts her into 3rd percentile. So now she is 'flagged' and I need to bring her in next month for a weigh-in. She was 28 pounds two months ago for one of our regular respiratory visits, but now her illness cycle goes canker sores, then croup attack, then illness, then post illness hives, and the canker sores are messing with her eating, even ice cream.
This isn't really a 'how-to' thread- I stuff her with fatty food as much as I can, and so does daycare. It is more of a *sigh* thread.
Anyway, tips for toddler canker sores?
