I think a little before 6 months. Before 7 months she could easily sit up from laying without holding on or pushing. I kinda think she's freakishly strong though. She's long and lean with an average size noggin :-)

@meganmp: I have a large baby (big head, big body, just big all around!) and he has been VERY late with his physical milestones. He was not crawling (or even pulling himself up to sit) at his 12 month appt, so we set up an early intervention evaluation for physical therapy. Well, last Sunday afternoon (11 days after his first birthday), he literally woke up from a nap, pushed himself up to sit and took off crawling across the floor. As if he had been doing it for months. In just the 10 days since, he suddenly looks like he's close to walking.

I think that being larger definitely plays into it, but I also think, at least with my LO, that some kids just aren't interested in some things until a later age. He was perfectly content to sit in one spot and play with one toy until last week. Now he wants everything in sight. It all depends on the baby.

for us it was about 10.5 months. he crawled and pulled to stand from 7 months, but couldn't figure out how to get into a sitting position by himself until over 10 months. then one day he just got it!

@meganmp: my twins are 8 months and they still aren't pulling themselves into the sitting position yet. I keep wondering if there is anything I can do to help them. When they fall over from the sitting position they can't get back to that position.

Chloe was maybe 5 months the first time she got herself in a sitting position. I remember us playing on the floor, on our tummies, and I got up to get some water. When I turned back around she was sitting. I had to do a double take! I actually said outloud "umm that's not where I put you!!"

Sadie was pulling herself up the sitting position at six months, but my advice is try not to compare! Every baby is SO different! They can pull up to standing, so there should be no worry about their muscles or abilities. Just remind yourself that of course they will sit up... they're not going to lie down forever!

@Adira: They aren't pulling up literally - they will use their hands to push up off the ground just like we do. :)

Thanks all! I have spoken to the ped, and she was no help in calming me down. She told me that if they're not crawling or walking by 12 months, we need to go to see a physical therapist to rule out any problems. I think that part of the reason is their HUGE heads- DD is off the charts when it comes to head size- at 8 months I bought her a 3T sized hat and it fit her perfectly. I struggle to get 12 months onesies over her huge bean. It's just hard for them to get those gigantic melons up. I want them to be able to get into the sitting position on their own simply for my own santiy- they shriek when they fall over and want to be sitting again, so I'm constantly putting someone back up. They're usually pretty solid, but they knock each other over more and more often now... sigh.

I don't even remember! One day he rolled over, the next thing I know he was walking.

There's a huge range of what is considered on target, so I wouldn't worry too much...as you see, I have already forgotten and my son's almost 3.

Xander's 7 months and isn't anywhere close to pulling to situp!

What do babies even pull up on? Just their crib bars? I don't know that I lay Xander down next to anything that would help him in this milestone...

So, no advice, but I suspect Xander will be in the same boat as your baby!

around 8-9 months here. she's over 10 months now she did it around the same time she started crawling. i wouldn't worry at all though, esp if they are pulling up already. one day they'll just start doing it all of a sudden! :-)

Dd pulled herself up in her crib at 5 months.

Went from belly to sitting position at 4.5 months

She started sitting up without assistance (we put her in the sitting position) at 4 months.

Started crawling at 6 months and 11 months started walking. From what I hear she is a little advance but she has her older cousins to thank for that. She wants to keep up with them.

it's hard not to worry about these things. is it that they can't get into sitting position on their own, or maybe they don't want to (the same way they don't want to pull up to standing)? that's great that they pull up to standing! has your pediatrician said anything about it? it might be worth asking, although i know most of the time it's just normal variances that are all soon forgotten.

ETA: after reading mamamoose's comment, if you mean sitting from the back-lying position, then LO is far, far away from that.

She learned to do this when she started crawling (right around seven months). She's ten months now and I don't know that I've ever seen her go from flat on her back to sitting up (that takes some serious core muscles!). But if she ends up on her back she flips over to her tummy, gets on all fours, and then sits on her butt.

I was reading the "When did your LO walk" thread, and I was just curious- I've been having some unwarrented freak outs recently, because my babies are the only babies I know IRL that aren't mobile right now. I'm wondering- when did your LO pull themselves into the sitting position on their own? Mine just can't seem to figure out how to do it. They're 10 months old, and both can pull themselves into the standing position from sitting (though they choose not to do it), but if they fall over from sitting, they can't get up on their own. I added a poll and enabled multiple votes if you have multiple LOs.
