@lolo, Whoa.

@mrs. lemon-lime, it sounded fairly common--everyone know someone who "disappeared". My mom would have been a teen in the 70's, but DH's grandma tells some fascinating stories about having her babies

@blackbird: my mom was a teen in the 60s. She described teen pregnancy as "getting caught" having pre-pre-marital sex. One of her friends got married while in HS because she was caught. One of old neighbors who is older than my mom is rumored to have been sent to CA when she began to show as a teen. She doesn't have any children.

@bluewolverine: @bakerbee: The experience has been fascinating but certainly one that I am happy to be leaving behind. I have been continually surprised at the level of sexism, amongst other forms of discrimination that are so common place here in Qatar. As a Social Worker my previous roles predominately involved working towards equality and fighting oppression, I had to give up my career to come here as there is no Social Work system which was a hard blow. I would consider writing a guest blog post... perhaps once I finish therapy!

@blackbird: both pregnancy and birth control are still illegal outside marriage here. Both woman and child are imprisoned; http://dohanews.co/cost-going-into-debt-qatar/.

The 1950's and 1960's were pretty fucked up in regards to women. I read this book (The Girls Who Went Away) about women who had unplanned pregnancies during that era....it was incredibly eye opening. This was before Roe vs. Wade. Many were forced to go to maternity homes and strong armed into giving their babies up for adoption. They knew nothing about birth control or safe sex, nobody told them what to expect when birthing the baby (many were just knocked out), or their rights. You were kicked out of high school and college if you were pregnant...and it also discussed the whole birth control thing and how it was illegal unless you were married!

We just recently had a big thing about diversity and inclusion at our company and our CEO, a woman at the time, talked about how when she was first starting, she couldn't get credit cards or even buy a house under her own name even though she was the one bringing in the majority of her and her husband's income. That kind of stuff is CRAZY!

It'll be really interesting to see what people are saying about OUR times in the next 30-40 years!

@Lolo: Wow. I guess I should say, "I'm so happy to be a woman in the USA now and not the 1960s. Also happy to be here and not many other places NOW where women are treated so unjustly."

I am currently living in the Middle East and have been asked about birth control at job interviews and was also asked why I don't have children yet. I require my husbands written permission to work, he recieves a text message when I use our joint account to make purchases (does not work the other way round!) and also when I leave the country. I am moving back to the UK in 2 weeks, thank goodness!

Wow...hadn't realized that the Ivy Leagues didn't take women until the late 60s/70s. And the rest of that proves anti-feminism the most ridiculous kind of revisionist history...and male chauvinism. I need to read the rest of the article!

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: Sounds like a pretty fair comparison to me.

Holy cow - my mom needed my Dad's permission in 1975 to get a tubal ligation. And the hospital wanted my aunt to get her husband's permission to get a hysterectomy in 1987. 1987.

Yes the pregnancy discrimination act wasn't passed until 1978, so before then it was illegal to fire women and discriminate against them because they were pregnant.

Women also couldn't get credit cards in their own name until the 70s, in many states couldn't buy property in their own name without having a male relative sign as well until just a couple of decades ago.

When people, especially women, act like feminism was only needed to remedy situations long long ago; it makes me a little bit ragey and also boggles the mind.

So crazy! I cannot believe how recent a lot of this was. My grandma was pregnant with my dad in 1969/1970 and worked at a bank. She said the she was allowed to keep working through her pregnancy but had to stay out of sight of customers. And she was married.

The Charlize Theron movie North Country was based on real events that began in 1975. As part of the physical exam the female employees had to undergo was a pelvic exam to make sure they weren't pregnant. How crazy!

I posted a link on my facebook to this article on CNN about what it was like to be a woman in the 1960s. http://www.cnn.com/2014/08/07/living/sixties-women-5-things/index.html?hpt=hp_t5

Women couldn't go to Yale or Princeton until 1969. Harvard didn't take women until 1977. It was legal to deny you a job/promotion because you were pregnant. Women couldn't serve on juries in all 50 states until 1973.

My aunt commented that she was once asked during a job interview what kind of birth control she was on. I cannot even imagine. Also, there were restaurants that had "men-only" dining rooms. I can't even.

So happy to be a working mom (and woman in general) now!
