This article from Fast Company actually has stories of people refusing to hire vocal fry-ers. http://www.fastcompany.com/1834461/verbal-tic-doom-why-vocal-fry-killing-your-job-search

I must admit that I do this, although I never thought about it until you mentioned it. And I'm a reformed valley girl. But I hate it when Britney does it! In fact every time I watch The X Factor I wonder what it is that I hate about the way she talks and this is it!

I only do this when I'm imitating people. I agree, it's the new valley girl.

I know lots of people who do it but I guess I've never "caught" it ;)

@dagret: Yes! It's like modern day Valley Girl. It's almost like an attitude you slip into. I find myself using it when I say 'yahhhhh' or 'whateverrrr' haha. My brother's girlfriend talks like this constantly and it is very annoying when you are paying attention. I think it is especially 'nails on a chalkboard' to men.

Right? That's the worst part about it, how easy it is to slip into!

Oof I try not to do this at all but I do have friends that talk like this and it is easy to slip in to. Luckily the second I do it my husband mocks me so hard (in a loving way lol) that I immediately stop.

Do you catch yourself using "vocal fry?" http://m.youtube.com/#/watch?v=UsE5mysfZsY&desktop_uri=%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DUsE5mysfZsY
That's the only decent example of a video I could find (plus I don't have the patience to watch multiple videos on it...). Britney Spears does it a lot when she speaks and so does Zoey Deschanel when she moves around in her quirky girl speech patterns.

More than one of my coworkers does it and one especially is SO ANNOYING. She'll speak regularly all day then when she gets on a client call she'll drop her voice a half register and draaaaaagggg everything out. It sounds even worse over the phone than in person.

And I swear its contagious. If I'm around her a lot I find myself starting to do it. It's hard because at work I try really hard to keep girlish speech patterns neutralized (not ending every sentence in an upswing, like I'm asking a question?) plus I have a western pa accent that can sound really hickish if I let it.

So, do you vocal fry?
