Many PC laptops are kinda shoddy... I bought one from Dell that never even worked!

Like a fool I didn't even open the box it came in til a month after it arrived, and by then the no hassle guarantee had expired ugh. They sent over 2-3 guys to fix it under warranty, but none of them knew what they were doing and I was never able to use the laptop at all.

Laptops are a lot harder to make than desktops, because there's a lot less space in the laptop and overheating can be a real issue. A huge number of PC makers have stumbled with bad laptops...

I don't think they necessarily last longer. They are high quality computers, but if you compare it to a high quality PC I'm sure they are comparable. It's just that a lot of people have crappy bargain basement laptops that are lucky to live 2 years.

I agree with those who say Apple has great customer service, though. I have had great experiences with Apple for the past 10 years and am definitely brand loyal.

If the MacBook Air has an integrated battery, not sure it can equally compare to MacBooks that don't. I did have to replace my MacBook Pro battery once in the 5 years I've had it... If I recall correctly, I think it was only around $100 to replace.

I never heard either that MacBooks are reputed to last longer than PC's... We have both in our house.

@Arden: yep They always fix mine for free, except one physical damage where I paid for the part and they paid for the repair

I bought my macbook in 2008 and honestly right now its falling apart, You would think it was over 10 years old. I has had to be repaired a few times ,has crashed multiple times including the very first day I got it and now a days macs can get viruses too. also the power cable had lots of problems and needed to be replaced constantly until they redesigned it. And it costs $80 for such a short power cable!. So I dont think its better or lasts longer than a Pc but I still prefer it and will buy another macbook (pro this time) soon.
Their customer service is great though!

Also Apple is very good about giving free repairs with no fuss, just bring it in to the store, and they fix it, no questions asked.

I've always heard it was based on the software/virus issue not being as common in Macbooks as to their longevity!

A spin off question off MrsJYW's thread about MacBooks... She posted that MBs should last a "long time", but why would a MacBook last longer than a PC laptop?

Is it because of build quality or software or something else? I'm curious because I used my previous laptop for 5 years before I decided to buy a new one and DH has used his current laptop going on 5 years. We both use our laptops daily.

Are MacBooks reputed to last much longer than that? I have a MacBook Air and since the battery is integrated and once the battery dies, depending on the replacement cost, I might have to get a new machine.
