I think it'd be weird to have the laundry room in the master bathroom.

It's all about your priorities. I have a big master tub and upstairs laundry and love both. I would never get rid of the tub for the laundry though. The hall bath just isn't big enough for a grown adult to take a nice soak. I love a bath in the winter and invaluable for pregnancy aches and pains. I wouldn't want my laundry in the master bathroom either though.

I would, if you will never use the tub (my parents never ever used their tub in any of our houses, we don't even have one in our house now). I think if you're willing to spend a little money to make it a nice/neat laundry area, it's worth it! I'd just make sure you're ok with the sound of the washer/dryer MOTN if you have them on. Otherwise, I think it's so convenient! I hate lugging laundry up and down too! I feel like I'd be better about doing laundry if it's right there!

The previous owners of my house did a master bedroom and laundry room addition. The bathroom is large so I wonder why they didn't put in a tub. I think I would enjoy it more than I enjoy having to use the guest bathroom for a bath. However, if it was a question of the tub or laundry on the second floor, I would absolutely keep my laundry room where it is. It's so convenient.

We could have had laundry in the dark cold basement. But it's in the kitchen instead. Not ideal but better than slipping on those awful stairs.

The one thing I don't like about second floor laundry is having to drag the dirty clothes (especially the ones from where my husband has been working in the yard) all the way upstairs. But from a practical perspective, it makes sense to keep the laundry where the clothes are, which tends to be in the bedrooms. So I vote upstairs....in the master bath and remove the jetted tub. I hate those things, they gross me out.

Just for clarification - are you talking about removing your whirlpool tub and putting the laundry in your master bath? Or removing the tub from the hall bathroom and putting the laundry there? I'm 100% for removing the tub from the hall bathroom and putting your laundry in there!

I would 1000% move the laundry upstairs. We have our laundry in a closet outside of LO's room and it has never bothered him during a nap or at night time. Our master bath doesn't have a tub and I don't miss it at all. I hated our whirlpool tub in our last house cause it was such a pain to use and clean!

@Truth Bombs: funny I actually dislike giving the kids a bath in our big jetted master bath tub- it takes forever to fill up, even to the low level they need, and cleaning it with the jets it's such a pain. But we only have the one bath, the other bathroom is just a stand up shower, so that's what it is for now. But, our master bath is also small.

I have had a combo of all these things along the way and here are my thoughts.

1. Second floor laundry is insanely convenient.
2. However, I was CONSTANTLY worried that the washer would overflow, or have some sort of malfunction and water would seep through the floor, or one of the machines wouldn't be well enough supported and could come crashing through the ceiling.
3. Laundry in your master bath is really annoying. We have company stay from out of town often and they usually like to throw in a load of wash before they head home. When we had the laundry in our master bath in our old apartment, it was a pain to have people in our bedroom if they needed to do a load.
ETA: If this will be your home for the next 20 years, I assume you will eventually teach your kids to do some of their own laundry. Do you want them having to come into your room to do it?
4. I love baths. Plus, I find it MUCH easier to give our kids a bath in the master where there is more room to spread out than in their Jack n' Jill bathroom.

So in the end, I personally would vote not to move the laundry upstairs, but these are the things I think you should consider.

I love baths, however I would still vote for the laundry upstairs. I can't imagine lugging it up and down. I do laundry every day and this would drive me nuts! I say rip it out!

@ValentineMommy: Same. We have both. The 2nd floor laundry trumps the tub hands down.

I'll preface this by saying: I have both a soaking tub and a 2nd floor laundry room, both of which I added onto my house.

And I can say hands down, the laundry room was the smartest thing I ever did to my house. It also gets used 1000x more than the tub.

I should have mentioned that the laundry corner is tucked behind the water heater and furnace. There isn't a lot of room down there to upgrade it.

@SweetCaroline: I wish we had a mudroom to put our laundy in... even if it was on the first floor instead of the second. OH has degenerative disc disease so I understand about tailoring a home for our bodies of the future!

@Foodnerd81: The shower is in a 4.5 foot space. It isn't the greatest shower ever but it is better than average. I am willing to do laundry around naps (it just happens to go that way now anyways) but that is a good point.

@agold: The only other place we could put it without major renovations is another spot in the basement or maybe our powder room on the first floor, but would take up most of the powder room.

You have a nice enough shower in the master bath, right? As long as the floor will support it (not vibrate too much or whatever) and it won't be so loud that you can do laundry during nap or bedtime, I would move it. But I think making the laundry corner of the basement nicer would be a good option of having the laundry up there would be loud and disruptive.

We are foregoing a tub in our master suite and moving laundry into our mud room. It too hard to trek up and down stairs with infants and toddlers. Laundry would be so much easier if it was on the main floor for us. This is our forever home, so we also are thinking about having knees/backs eventually, etc.

I would keep the tub and finish the basement/spruce up the laundry corner to make a nice bright laundry space - maybe a table for folding, shelves, etc.

Right now, my laundry is in the basement in a dirty, dark corner of my two story home. All the bedrooms and the two full baths are on the second floor. We have a laundry chute but lugging clean laundry upstairs sucks.

The master bath is 9×10ft with a 3.5x5.5ft whirlpool tub which is never used. There is another tub in the hall bath.

I'm thinking about ripping out the tub and putting the laundry machines in its place. I would leave the stacks for the tub so in the future it would be very easy to put a tub back.

What do you think? Should I move my laundry upstairs? Is laundry in the master bath weird?

There is a 90% chance this is our home for the next 20 years.
