@yoursilverlining: I'm in NorCal, so nothing specific. Just looking for the can't miss things to do, I suppose. And things that show us what the different areas are all about.

@Ms.Badger: I was going to suggest the Huntington Library as well. Their rare books are excellent and they have a nice tea there, which my LO enjoyed a lot. That's something a bit different but fun!

What things might you be looking for in so cal that you can't really find where you live?

@Boogs: We don't do a lot of driving because my daughter was not a happy passenger and neither is my son, lately, but we did do SD zoo with dd and we have done the safari park pre-kids, so we're thinking of taking them there. I think my four year old would like it.

Things in orange county:
If you want a chiller, more nature-y beach: Crystal cove (plan for breakfast at Beachcomber)
Arty area with restaurants and shops: Laguna Beach
Long Beach Aquarium
San Juan Capistrano: mission and cute little area with petting zoo called ZooMars

Not OC, but Huntington Library in Pasadena has extensive gardens and mini-museums with art and rare books
Also not OC, but my favorite desert location is Anza Borrago, Borrago Palm Canyon trail is pretty short and flat and leads to a very cool Palm oasis
Also, if you can do Balboa park (san diego) on Sunday you can see a live performance on the outdoor organ. They also have daily puppet shows

@Pinkberrry: Coming home from SD, still waiting for a better deal before I book that flight. No Disney this trip, either. Thanks for the suggestions!

@Mrs. Train: I'll have a 6yo and a 2.5yo by then. It will be two of our birthdays so we want to do a combo of fun for the kids and somewhat relaxing, but we want to see things. We've done SD zoo, Wild Animal Park, Sea World in the past so probably won't do any of those. Outside of that and Disney, we haven't done much exploring in socal.

Is Legoland your only theme park? Because there's Universal Studios with the Wizarding World of Harry Potter near Burbank. Then of course there's Disneyland in Anaheim.

Other things to do in SoCal --
- Santa Monica/Santa Monica Pier/3rd Street Promenade
- Griffith Observatory (free) if your kids are into planets, then hike to the Hollywood Sign
- Redondo Beach and Redondo Pier
- Huntington Beach and State Street for food and shopping
- La Brea Tar Pits if your kids are into dinosaurs
- Getty Museum
- LACMA

Agree about just driving down PCH and stopping by what interests you along the way! It is a beautiful drive.

For SD, there is the Wild Animal Park and the San Diego Zoo, Coronado Beach, The Gaslamp District, Balboa Park...

For food - Stop by an in-n-out! And Mexican food here is always a favorite, but there are so many good food options here, it's hard to go wrong.

In the LA area there is a ton of stuff. Is there anything your kids are particularly interested in right now? Is there something you are interested in? Tourist attractions, outdoor adventures? Relaxing days?

How many days are you going to be in so cal for? Is your flight round trip out of Burbank? If it's an open jaw flight out of SD you'll have more time down there obviously, but if it's RT out of Burbank then you'll need to leave SD a bit earlier to backtrack.
I'm guessing you won't be heading to Disneyland since you're planning on going to Legoland. Otherwise, if you're staying in LA for a few days, the LA zoo paired with a trip to travel town at Griffith Park could be fun for the family. Driving down PCH is also nice in April depending on the weather and stopping and having lunch in Santa Monica with a walk around 3rd street. The Getty is an awesome museum that's free except for parking and they usually have good kids exhibits...the La Brea Tarpits could also be squeezed into a day with LACMA if you're going to be mid city.
As far as SD goes, you could do Balboa Park, the mission, Del Mar/the beaches are pretty though SD is not my forte.

Any southern CA bees have any great tips/stops/places to stay/anything really?! We are doing a trip in April and will land in Burbank and over a week slowly head down to SD, with one day spent at Legoland.
