Thanks everyone!! Appreciate the responses! I can barely maintain my single account as it is so the thought of starting afresh just because of her seems extreme :meh:

@avivoca: @Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I ran this past the husband and he hands down agrees that it's a no-brainer to unfriend and stand by the decision! He said as a manager he would never request in the first place, but IF he did, wouldn't take offence if someone refused.
And agree with the fact I should probably limit the venting....but even alluding to the fact it was a difficult week just takes on a different meaning in that context.

@Anagram: I think fb is a bit easier to customise and set different profiles for different 'groups' and 'lists' of contacts, but IG seems to be a bit more one dimensional. Like all or nothing!

@littlejoy: I like this too. And all for the private settings! It's amazing how many random requests I get per week from strangers...my account is really not really that exciting! I only post a few times per month but that is still a lot of insight into my personal life.

Block her. If she asks, tell her you decided to make you let IG private to act as a journal for yourself. You'll actually need to set it to private, or else she'll be able to see your feed from other accounts.

I don't know how IG works because I don't have it but would block or delete or whatever without hesitation.

I'm with Mrs. Lemon-Lime on this one. I had co workers who friended me on IG which is what I use to connect with family and really close friends-told them it's friends and family outside of work.

Perhaps once you do announce your pregnancy you can use that as an excuse? Block her but explain that you've decided to only allow family due to privacy concerns with having a little one.

I'd delete/ block her and if/ when it's brought up put your big girl pants on and tell her you are keeping work and private life separate. She may huff and puff, but friending her is NOT part of your job duties. Even though I am probably guilty of this too, I would always think twice about work venting on social media.

I would migrate to a new account. IG makes it easier to have multiple accounts now. Blocking on IG isn't subtle. It's super annoying and frustrating that she's like this but job tension sucks.

If you ever chat with her at the office about non-work topics could you say something to the effect of you are getting tired of drama/heated topics/etc on social media and are thinking you'll take a break or quit it altogether? Then keep using for a week or two more, (but a little less frequent) and then block her altogether after that.

@avivoca: @T.H.O.U.: It feels very risky to block your boss on social media, especially if they are stalker-y in the first place! It could cause all kinds of tensions at work, and also threaten job security...

I don't use Instagram much, but is there no way to group followers so that only certain people see posts? I have all coworkers who request to be my friend in a group on my FB and when I want to post something more personal (Like Politics or a vent about being home with a sick kid on a day I've called in sick), then I post but exclude my work group.

@Nutella: Honestly, I would block her without a second thought. If you are worried about how she will react, either tell her you decided to leave IG or start a new account related to a hobby or something.

In the future, I suggest not being friends with any of your superiors on social media while you are working for them.

@mrbee: thanks for this, I was hoping to avoid a new account if possible - since I love looking back at all my photos (surely am not alone in this!) - but I see how this could be the least obvious way. Major regret in accepting her request... once they are added it's so much harder to remove them :bummed:
i also dislike this new 'suggestions for you' feature where you see people you may potentially like to follow. This is unhelpful when trying to limit followers!

Hi all, just looking for some input/advice on what is plaguing me as a difficult decision...though I feel it really should be quite simple!

Long story short, my boss added me as a friend on FB and IG soon after I started at this job in 2016 and I relented being the newbie and unaware of what a stalker she was. We don't really mesh IRL but she will often reference something I posted on IG (but she didn't actively 'like' - insert eye roll). I don't use FB much at all but IG i love as it's only close friends and family, but will sometimes share some of those to FB 3-4 x/year.

I unfollowed her on IG today and already feel way better about not seeing her uninspiring crap on my feed - yay!

I am going on mat leave later this year (haven't announced the pregnancy to her yet) and am already excited about the idea of unfriending her then, but my question is, can I just block her on IG from now? Since she is such a stalker she will def notice a 'restricted view' on FB, but maybe I could do that down the line since I don't use it that often...but when I have a crappy week (usually thanks to her awful style of micromanaging) I no longer feel safe on IG to vent. I got really close to posting something very close to venting the other week and she passively-aggressively mentioned it the next day and I was sufficiently grossed out by her lack of professionalism/stalkerness.

I have many previous work acquaintances on social media but only those whom i have had good relationships with and who i would have a drink with outside of the office...after I have left the company!! This whole being friends with the boss thing is new and unnerving to me! :meh:

I know i'm probably over-thinking this, but would love to hear any thoughts or similar experiences! Also keen to hear if anyone has unfriended while starting mat leave? This is a bit more dicey as it muddies that water but i'm in no way prepared to stay friends with her long term.

Thanks in advance!!
