My in laws just signed up for it, and they think it's amazing and were telling us we should too. My husband looked into it and talked to some friends and apparently there are a couple of companies that do this and that solar city is the worst.

I don't remember all the details, but you pay your monthly "fee" (lease) and don't get any of the tax benefits (Solar City does because they own the panels). They lock you in for 20 years at whatever rate for your electricity, so your only hope is that you make money off your electricity. I know Solar City won't guarantee you'll make any money off your electricity, but they'll say it in their sales pitch. There is the assumption that because electricity prices will go up and you're in a locked rate that you will make money, but you will have the same technology for 20 years and we all know how quickly technology advances, meaning that the amount you make from your electricity will lessen over time. I think they lock in the rate at which you get paid for the electricity you make too?

I can't remember the rest of the details. I'll ask him tonight!

@Shutterbug: DH did a ton of research and talked to several different companies before deciding on sunrun. I can send you his spreadsheets and data if you want more info! We got solar panels installed back in august.

@PurplePumps: we did let the sales guys go ahead and set up a site survey with the engineers (or whoever, not quite sure) in a couple weeks, so I'll let you know how it goes!

ooh! Commenting to follow! DH has been talking about panels for a while, but we just haven't had time to look into it. A friend of mine bought panels outright and he says he actually gets money back now cause they produce more than he needs and expects the break even point to be 4-5 years. I would definitely see it as a pro if a house had them. I've seen Solar City ads too, but haven't looked into them.

Anybody have (or know someone who has) experience with SolarCity? We had two salespeople come to our door last week, and I thought they were trying to sell us a solar panel system, but apparently with SolarCity you don't pay for the system, you just pay them a discounted rate for the electricity you use (and credit for the extra you make)? I'm not sure if this is a big old scammy scam and I'm just naive, or if it's a real thing and worth pursuing.

Also, if you were house hunting, and a house had solar panels, would you see it as a pro or a con?
