We tried to follow the recommendations in the BLW book. They say most spices are fine, but watch out for salt and sugar. At first I was really worried about salt, like, they say not to give more than one slice of bread per day. But my toddler has never finished a whole slice of bread in his life. Usually he eats two bites. So I'm not worried about it any more.

My pediatrician said anything goes except for shell fiSh, peanut butter, and honey. And no cows milk til she 1. Those are pretty much the only things we avoid! (Well obviously I don't feed her cake)

other than that I just try to stick with a balanced diet...we eat sensibly anyway. She seems to love garlic!

I personally think that not adding seasoning to a baby's food is cray-cray level crazy. I've used a lot of different spices in my girl's food from the very start, and she now totally rejects bland food. She loves flavor. I really do not understand the reasoning behind that - is it an allergy concern? My daughter even likes spicy food, waaaaay more than me. I think most of these preferences are just about what you're exposed to early on, honestly.

I was always careful not to add a ton of salt to anything, though. Usually just as much as my husband used, but far less than I prefer.

I don't feed off our plates yet but I wouldn't worry either. We're not big salt people to begin with. I will have to worry about soy sauce usage though!

We feed off of our plates all the time. As long as the spices aren't overly hot, he gets them too. He got some rice, cheese, guac, and sour cream from my Chipotle burrito today at lunch.

I really don't worry too much about salt. I switch around what he eats so often, it just isn't a concern to me. I just don't add extra salt when I cook, and we add it to our own plates for meals.

I add spices regularly ( he likes dill in his egg yolk) and if he tries something off of my plate, I don't worry about salt, too much, as long as its not all the time and a large portion. Same with sugar. It's not as if I'm feeding him cake or fried chicken.

Oops, i missed the "BLW" part. I sometimes give her some meats off my plate that are seasoned, but as i said above, it's such a small amount that i don't really worry.

I've added cumin and cayenne to beans, oregano to zucchini and cinnamon to sweet potatoes. I've also added garlic and ginger to chicken porridge. I have to admit, i added just a tiny pinch of salt to the porridge. I don't feel bad since i don't give her cheerios or mum mums which have salt in it.

Instead of pureeing the fruits and veg, I would just cut them up
into little pieces so no spices are necessary.

No salt or sugar, but LO has had herbs & spices (cinnamon and sage thus far)...our pediatrician says differently (so many varying opinions). I haven't shared much from my plate with LO, but I have shared sweet potato and banana. I recently put a slice of pear on my plate just because I knew she would reach for it (I was eating something else). She took the pear slice and sucked/chewed on it for a bit until she lost interest. I finished the rest of the pear after dinner.

For those of you that do BLW or give your child food off your plate. How do you manage salt/sugar & spices? My doctor said not to add sald, sugar or seasoning to LO's food yet, so it really limits what food I can share with her. Basially for now she just sticks to purees
